🔋⚙️ Lithium-Sulfur Batteries: Potential in the Automotive Industry 🚗🔬 Lithium-sulfur batteries, much like the majority of rechargeable batteries, harness the electrical charge difference between two electrodes and the movement of ions between them during charge and discharge cycles. These electrodes are separated by a layer of inert material and immersed in an electrolyte whose function is to facilitate the flow of ions between them during the charging and discharging process. Here are some key points: 🔄 Operation: They leverage the electrical charge difference between two electrodes (lithium and sulfur) for charge and discharge cycles. ⚡ Challenge: Cathode dissociation during cycles, due to the formation of polysulfides, can affect its performance and durability. 🚗 Advantages: Higher theoretical capacity (up to 2,600 Wh/kg) than conventional lithium batteries (550 Wh/kg), promising ranges of over 2,000 km in electric vehicles. 🌡️ Adaptability: They perform well in extreme temperatures and are lighter than lithium-ion batteries. The American startup Lyten, based in Silicon Valley, has partnered with the prestigious automotive group Stellantis for the production of lithium-sulfur batteries. They are focused on enhancing the technology by using porous graphene cages to coat the cathode, extending the battery's lifespan without compromising its performance. 🔋 As there is more and more announcements recently on #solidstatebatteries here is the interesting published article on "Solid State Batteries" by Porsche Consulting ! 👉 6 Challenges for Solid State Batteries : ► Improving Product Properties : The cathode material and the solid-state electrolytes have to be chemically compatible. Developers need to focus above all on chemical stability and thinner coatings. ► Converting #gigafactories : . New procedures have to be tested and integrated into overall process flows. Experts estimate that conversion could retain around 40 percent of current machinery. ► Ensuring system integration : have to find ways of integrating volumetric changes of this type into otherwise rigid automotive structures. ► Establishing robust #supplychains : Solid-state batteries require different materials and machinery than conventional lithium-ion batteries, so the industry needs to set up new supply chain ► Lowering #costs : . The cost of stacking the smaller solid-state cells is two or three times higher than for conventional lithium-ion cells. ► #funding the start-up stage : The first step is to build a #pilotplant in the MWh range at an estimated cost of 500 million to 1 billion euros. If planners envision their own #gigafactories of up to 20GWh, they will need to invest approximately 2 billion euros more: 1 to 1.5 billion for machinery, systems, and buildings, and 0.5 to 1 billion for personnel & high failure rates during the start-up phase. 👉 If the challenges are met and the #technology can go onto the market as predicted, the consultants see a potential cumulative market for industrial production of solid-state batteries of >400 billion euros by 2035. 👉 Pilot Projects will be starting from 2024. The next groundbreaking innovation in the field of electromobility - perhaps with European participation from Northvolt? The development of batteries for electric cars is placing a stronger focus on #cost and #environmentalimpact. Significant progress is being made in #Asia in particular, with ongoing efforts to replace elements such as lithium, cobalt or nickel. One environmental issue with conventional lithium-ion batteries is the use of fluorine-based binders to improve efficiency and life. There are alternative battery technologies that may be based on more environmentally friendly materials such as iron and sodium hydroxide. #China is making breakthroughs in the development of salt batteries, which are seen as a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative. General Motors and Honda yesterday announced the start of production at their 50-50 joint venture production facility, FCSM – the first large-scale manufacturing joint venture to build #fuelcells. FCSM was established in Brownstown, Michigan, U.S., in January 2017, based on a joint investment of $85 million. The 70,000-square-foot facility has already created 80 jobs. The #hydrogen power solutions built at FCSM will be used by both companies in various product applications and business ventures. Honda and GM engineers began work in 2013 on the co-development of the next-generation fuel cell system. In addition to advancing fuel cell system performance, the companies collaborated to double durability compared to the 2019 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell by using corrosion-resistant materials and by improving low-temperature operation. Together, the two companies also focused on lowering development and manufacturing costs by leveraging economies of scale, advancing the cell design, simplifying supporting auxiliary equipment, utilizing common sourcing, and reducing the use of costly precious metals. Through this collaboration, the new fuel cell systems will be one-third less expensive to make when compared to the cost of the fuel cell system in the 2019 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. Significant efforts have also been made at FCSM to ensure the highest levels of quality while improving manufacturing productivity. The venture incorporates many first-of-their-kind methods for automating membrane-electrode-assembly production and fuel cell stack assembly.
