SpaceX is a fantastic example of 𝐈𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬, and more companies should create the same mentality of improving a design. These are the changes that happened in 4 years. The Raptor engine is a full-flow combustion cycle (FFSC) that was developed for SpaceX's super-heavy-lift Starship to be used in its first and second stages. While you can see a 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬 plus accompanying vehicle hardware, what is impressive to me is the physical design and reduction of components. With the goal of producing 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐲 to match flight demand, they were also able to cut costs by more than half from Raptor 1 to Raptor 2. If you're a space and leadership junkie like me, you may appreciate this break down of the latest booster + Starship integrated flight test. This is a great break down of each aspect of the flight, with slow motion aspects to really hone in on the detail involved in the progress. Some noteworthy items. 1) ability to change out rocket parts like tires at NASCAR 2) all 33 raptors stayed lit. 3) Hot staging worked out, setting the stage for up to 10% more payload down the road (note the staged reduction in raptors in the transition) 4) starship was on its way to orbital insertion velocity. 5) Orbital launch pad, had barely a scratch this time. 6) over 17M pounds of booster thrust. New challenges, booster return, starship orbital insertion and reentry tiles staying stuck on. Enjoy! ps. Love that pink/orange/blue of the methane / LOX burn on booster. For the #investors and #capital out there... just think how much money is lost on EACH lost launch that 'goes up' in this manner... while being lost during the launch stages. It’s been amazing to see my colleagues in propulsion hone in on the Raptor engine. Incredibly, each version upgrade has come with fewer parts, improved manufacturability & reliability, less mass and higher thrust! Conventional wisdom would have said that there would be trade-off between some of these attributes. The principle is to simplify and then optimize and not the other way around. Notice the clean intakes and joints as the Raptor progresses. Reminds me of a Tuba 🎺. Skunkworks is back! Hermeus lays out the modern engineering playbook 1. Work out the key buckets of risks. 2. Map one design iteration to a risk. 3. Clawback requirements to the absolute basics. 4. Start integrated and stay integrated (not just systems/structures/manufacturing - but also the Federal Aviation Administration) 5. Ship as fast as possible and iterate. Yes, they're replicating the SpaceX playbook - but SpaceX replicated the Skunkworks/NASA playbook.

In addition to being amazing to watch, this morning's launch of the SpaceX Starship rocket is a vivid example of agile methodology in action: • Iterative design: while traditional rocket companies spend years (sometimes decades) on the drawing board before building anything, SpaceX has been building MVPs to test critical assumptions and de-risk their design. Today's rocket is at least the sixth generation built. • Continuous delivery: rather than pursuing perfection on the first flight, the SpaceX team has delivered a series of minimum viable products necessary to test the critical phases of the Starship program (landing, launch, re-entry, etc.). • Responsive to change: the second stage of today's rocket was named "Ship 28" -- SpaceX's growing factory in South Texas has already given the company 28 opportunities to improve their product based on the results of previous launches. This is a very well done and interesting perspective into the innovation that went into the SpaceX Merlin and Raptor engines. By rethinking the traditional designs, SpaceX has been able to achieve unprecedented efficiencies, lower costs and higher thrust/weight than any predecessor or competitor. It's not just about building bigger rockets... it's about making them better.
