When report insights are a BIG DEAL! Yes, the Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCMs) need to be more transparent and traceable and there has indeed been a lot of turmoil the last year. Yes, companies need to focus on decarbonization and not just buy themselves free. Yes, claims need to be more rigidly controlled. But, this report (from Forest Trends and Ecosystem Marketplace) shows what I have been a firm believer of for a long time: that businesses purchasing carbon credits from VCM (a) are more likely to report lower gross emissions year-on-year, and (b) invest more in emissions reductions, than companies not engaged in carbon markets. This is a big deal, and shows that investment into carbon projects is something that goes hand in hand with being committed to real change. We see more and more that companies that really mean it (and by "it" I mean seriously doing something about sustainability and seeing it as something integrated into business), use VCM engagement as a strategic play - not only for the actual credits, but for the strategic angle. This could for example be investing in projects or other carbon markets actors that are of strategic importance to brand or value chain or own innovation portfolio or for the co-benifits, or by taking new exciting positions in the VCM value chain (e.g., banks, insurers). According to Morningstar Sustainalytics’ emissions data published in 2023, on average, scope 3 emissions make up 60% of a company’s total carbon footprint. https://bit.ly/4c6xKEX However, because they’re the result of activities and assets not directly owned or controlled by a company, they are also the most difficult to track and report on. As a result, they often get left out of corporate sustainability reports. But when companies only address their scope 1 and scope 2 emissions, they’re leaving out a big piece of the puzzle.
