Earth's "Overshoot Day" occurred as early as August 2, the day when our planet can no longer regenerate the renewable resources required for what we consume and produce. In other words, we are living on credit from our renewable resources.   By choosing to give and receive circular Christmas gifts, we're not burdening future generations with a credit that impacts them; instead, we're utilizing a budget we can afford.    5 examples of circular gifts:   -The best gift is not a thing – give away your time! When on earth ISN'T IT Earth Day? 🌍 I've seen dozens of posts today, encouraging action on a topic that is so fundamental. Because if we don't look after the planet, we're all dead ☠ Earth Day launched in 1970, to raise awareness of the climate crisis and bring about behavioural change to protect the environment. 40+ years later, human emissions of greenhouse gases are the primary driver of climate change, 50% of UK car journeys are less than 5 miles and last year was the hottest ever recorded. I could go on.. If there's one thing we need to do, it's consider our own contributions - not to shame us (well, maybe, if you're a prolific jet setter, steak eater and fast fashion buyer) but to motivate action. And if we can take that motivation into our workplaces, we can make a significant shift. Every day. Earth Day or not. Think about your actions. Ditch the plastic. I recently attended an NHL hockey game. The theme of the event was “Go Green.” The event’s sponsor was the number one plastic polluter on the planet. Climate activists face ridicule year round. Then the Earth Day posts come once a year. This Earth Day, please commit to holding yourselves to the highest standards going forward. Engage with content about the climate crisis with curiosity and open mindedness. It could save your life. Everything about how we exist and do business has to change. We can’t focus on endlessly growing an economy forever. The USA has already consumed its fair share of natural resources for the year. This occurred on March 14th. Earth Overshoot Day. But here we are celebrating Earth Day. There’s nothing to celebrate if we don’t change how we do business and how we distribute resources. I’m not being hyperbolic when I say this. If we don’t get it together, and fast, humanity is on the way out. This is my Earth Day message. Rise up and revolt. Before it’s too late. We’re being lied to. We’re being manipulated. We’re being dismissed. We’re being shadow banned. We’re being killed. That’s not a fun message, but it’s a true message, and I hope true is preferred over fun, but if its not, I don’t really care. You deserve the truth about the climate crisis. Not the sugarcoated, giftwrapped, conversion optimized plasticky BS version of events. A culture of forced positivity can’t suppresss facts and avoid reality forever. And money can’t buy my silence. We need bodies in the streets. We need people sharing skills. We need educators teaching others. We need medics treating protesters. We need cooks providing mass feeding. Do those things and we might have a chance. If it’s more business as usual, get ready for a world of pain and disappointment. I want to see people winning, surviving, and thriving. That means a full throated acknowledgment that this current system can’t continue on forever. Eventually we hit the brick wall at 130 mph. One of the best Earth Day actions you can take? From now on, openly support climate activists. When you see them being attacked online or in the streets, defend them. With words and with deeds. That’s the baseline we need to commit to. Climate activists should be defended and supported. Their words should be listened to and taken seriously. No more dismissiveness. No more eye rolling. Listen to what they have to say. Dig deep and try to understand. The climate crisis is real. Human activity is accelerating climate change. Our current system of trade and resource management is entirely unsustainable and on the verge of collapse. The current species extinction rate is hundreds of times higher than its been in the last 10 million years. You can reread that sentence again. That’s how you know I’m serious about all this.
