Meet Estefano Larios, a remarkable Volunteen in our summer program! 👋 Estefano is a senior at Lowndes High School who was recommended for our program by his healthcare science teacher. He decided to join us to explore his interest in medicine. 💊 He's currently working on 5T, where his favorite part has been interacting with nurses, doctors, and patients. Thank you Amy Zipf, RN, PhD for all the coordination and work you put into this July 2023 Cohort. It was a pleasure to be included in the celebration and final new grad residency meeting today. Thank you Elaine Cournean for the beautiful reminder of being mindful and present in the moments. One person asked for advice of what we wish we had known or remembered or wanted to share, and I think they are great reminders for all: 1. Get Involved- at the unit or hospital level. 2. Nurses are an important part of patient safety, quality, and patient experience. 3. Stay curious - don’t be afraid to ask questions, learn, or ask “is this still the best practice?” 4. Remember humanity, we are all people first. Treat everyone with kindness and treat the person first. 5. Med-surg is not a starting point. Its a full specialty on its own. Its ok to like Med-Surg and grow your practice in that area, thats how we become experts in areas. 6. Give yourself grace - you’re learning a lot fast, you will make mistakes, give yourself grace to acknowledge how far you have come. Author, Speaker, Patient Advocate, Board Member, Equity Consultant, Researcher, Anti-racism trainer - EMWWAA Award Winner - helping everyone win through equity
What Matters To Me Today, I will be speaking to 1st Year Nursing students at Cardiff University who are about to embark on their first placement. They would have the opportunity to put what they've learnt so far into practice. At the centre of their work are the patients they would meet and care for. These are people who are more than their medical conditions or whatever perceived notions healthcare professionals might have about them. No matter their status outside of the clinical setting, coming into these spaces makes them vulnerable. I should know. I am one of them. It sounds lofty to talk about co-production with patients when it comes to shaping healthcare services but it rarely translates into practice. One of the most rewarding things I do is to be that voice for those who can't speak for themselves. Dear medical professional, no matter how vast your professional knowledge, you can never be an authority on your patient's lived experience. Don't make assumptions or jump to conclusions before you ask what they want and what matters to them. Remember that you are in a powerful position compared to the people you care for. Don't subject them to only monologues without giving them the opportunity to assimilate and respond to what you have said. Engage "respectful curiosity" when appropriate. As much as it depends on you, respect their dignity as human beings. It's understandable that you have time and resource constraints as medical professionals but don't let that get in the way of treating people as you would like your loved ones to be treated. Kindness, patience and courtesy go a long way. Most definitely, that goes both ways. To all the medical professionals who are already putting patient-centred care at the heart of clinical practice, mega thanks. As a patient, I truly appreciate you. I am grateful that I get the opportunity to shape the future of healthcare. #author #speaker #researcher #consultant #patientadvocate #patientcentredcare #coproduction #cancervictor #healthequity #inclusion #thrive #resilience #hope #soar

Ex-Doctor ➡️ Social Entrepreneur | Founder @ HealthCareer Transitions | Content Creator | Helping health professionals & doctors explore alternative careers 👩🏽💻
Being a bootstrapping solopreneur for 4+ years with no formal background in business means I have failed A LOT. 😂 But it also means I've learnt SO much about building online products and communities. When it came to deciding whether or not to start my new venture, I'd learnt to first let the world tell me if they actually needed my product, before I started to build it. I learnt how to validate ideas before launching them, in other words - does anyone even want this or am I being totally delusional (again)? In an effort to validate this new idea, I started creating YouTube videos on my experience of leaving medicine, and on alternative careers for doctors. I then set up a waitlist to gauge people's interest in joining a community of like-minded peers. I told myself I'd only go all in if I got to at least 100 people on the waitlist. Well... I'm super happy to share that that day has come!! Although I'm not gonna lie, I definitely already started working on the product when the waitlist had already hit 20 people. I just can't help myself. 😂 😬 So although I was hesitant to showcase to the world yet another potential flop, this time feels different. Over the past few years I've met so many amazing doctors and ex-doctors such as ☀️ Dr Anjalee Perera ▫️Dr India Duane Dr Yosi Anderson Dr Alisha Damani 🩺 Dr Gyles Morrison MBBS MSc Dr Lorelle Brownlee Dr Wiktor Szczudlinski Sara K. Miriam Fine (and my fave med student Christina Aaliyah Davis, nurse Dunia Ali and many more doctors off-platform!) who are exploring, or have already explored, alternative paths to clinical medicine. I hope to meet more of these inspiring doctors in the months to come, specifically Dr Ally Jaffee MBChB BSc Dr. Vishaal Virani, MBBS Dr Karan Rajan, Dr Claire Ashley, Dr Ndubuisi 'Andy' Egwim - I am in awe of all of your work and accomplishments! Whether it's starting a new career entirely, or building side-hustles and companies alongside clinical medicine, these doctors have shown that it's possible to thrive outside of the typical clinical routes we've become accustomed to. I'm super excited to be launching this network and community on May 1st (the waitlist is still open: https://lnkd.in/ev4MNuuQ). I've also learnt from another well-known ex-doctor Ali Abdaal (5M+ YouTube subscribers 👀 👏 ) after taking his course, that the last person standing wins. As a bootstrapping solopreneur, I've run myself (and my companies) into the ground by pushing too hard, too soon, and overworking myself daily. But Ali has taught me that sustainability and consistency are superpowers in this space. It's with that in mind that I hope this network will be around for a long time to come, and that it will provide much needed non-judgmental support to doctors, med students, nurses and other healthcare professionals carving out non-traditional career paths. Very excited for this new (sustainable 😉) chapter! #healthcareers #careerchange #doctors #alternativecareers
