Last week, CUSEF President James Chau welcomed distinguished delegates and leaders from across the globe to the 10th China and Globalization Forum in Beijing. Co-organized by CUSEF and the Center for China and Globalization, the forum convened a diverse array of participants for insightful discussions and roundtable sessions, ranging from topics on rethinking globalization and global governance, to prospects for Sino-US relations, China and the Middle East, and more. “Forces for deglobalization, decoupling, and disengagement are rising everywhere. Protectionism, nationalist populism, and great power competition threaten to unravel the hard-won gains of globalization, and leave humanity exposed. I recently undertook a book review essay, Understanding The Rise of China Through Its Leaders, for the South African Journal of International Affairs (SAJIA). The two books reviewed were The Dragon Roars Back: Transformational Leaders and Dynamics of Chinese Foreign Policy by Suisheng Zhao and Xi Jinping: Political Career, Governance, and Leadership, 1953-2018, by Alfred L. Chan. For a peek into the inner workings of the minds of China’s leaders since 1949 and, by extension, some understanding of modern China’s political psychology – which is crucial for understanding how this Asian Giant navigates today’s geopolitical climate – these two books are highly recommended. Rounding out the year by signing a contract with Hurst for a book provisionally titled Backlash: China's Struggle for Hegemony in Eurasia co-authored with Bradley Jardine. Based on over a decade of research, the book examines China's rising role in Central Asia, the friction this has generated in the region and how China is adapting to this. Now we just have to finish the thing!

Invest in highest quality of Chinese companies. The old time of punting on thematic small caps are gone. China's 20th 3rd Plenum -- In the communiqué, Chinese leadership laid out high quality developments and deep reforms as the major targets for the next five years with focus on: Innovation, Urbanization, Supply chain security, New quality productivity, Domestic demand expansion, Macro policy consistency. The comprehensive statement is likely to be released next week. I believe between now and end of July Politburo meeting is the potential window period for more easing rhetoric and measures.
