📈 Market Update: January 9th, 2024 📊 🌐Propylene: spot monomer has rallied from 44cpp up to 48cpp over the past 5 trading days representing a 9% increase in just a week. This short term rally has pulled up January contract averages to 47.5cpp. There is still a lot of time for that to change, but it presently doesn't appear as though we'll get as much as a fall in PGP come settlement as initially expected. ⚪Polypropylene: widespec high melt HOPPs and 2+ izod impact COPPs remain a challenge to source in the secondary markets, though there is room for some optimism as producers historically ramp up operating rates at the start of the new year. A Resin Market update: - Active and interesting spot resin markets observed at the end of January and beginning of February. - Processor demand was solid, with a significant portion of volume in bulk railcars and growing packaged truckloads. - Mid-week saw a bullish shift in sentiment, with producers raising railcar asking prices and export offers increasing. - Rising prices were noticeable mid-week amid an active market, with producers implementing notable increases, driven by strong demand from the export market. Possible Risks and Opportunities for #Procurement and #Sourcing Department: Risks: - Uncertainty in #Polyethylene contract settlements could lead to budgetary concerns and potential price fluctuations. - PDH complications affecting #Propylene prices may disrupt supply chains and increase costs. - Volatile energy markets could impact #transportation and production costs. Prime HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE: Flat (+$.05-.07/lb YTD) Prime HoPP, CoPP: Flat (+$.10/lb YTD) PE: - Completed business followed recent trends with LLDPE film as our biggest mover for the second week in a row, again followed by HDPE for blow molding and then HD injection, with LDPE mostly an afterthought. - In a rare instance, offgrade outsold prime. - LLDPE for both Injection and Rotomolding as well as LDPE for injection were tight. PP: - HoPP outsold CoPP and offgrade outsold prime. - Much of the older-stock / cheaper warehoused reseller resin has long been picked over, so very favorably priced material has become difficult to find, and consequently, most of our prime truckload dealings this week were filled from our market making inventory positions, which are also getting drawn down to tight levels. PGP: - By Friday afternoon the March PGP weighted average had clipped off $.015/lb to $.585/lb while deferred months endured slightly steeper loses and the backwardation steepened. As a reminder, Feb contracts settled up $.04/lb to $.55/lb. Based on spot activity and current levels, we expect another moderate price increase for March PGP contracts, but the month is still young and conditions can change.
