I recently attended this discussion (posted below), which was brilliantly moderated by #emmalembke, between #jonathanhaidt and #scottgalloway. And I have to say, it almost immediately changed my online behaviour and perhaps my life. #jonathanhaidt's book, #TheAnxiousGeneration explores the destructive impact social media has had on the generation of kids born after 1996. @profgalloway called Haidt "the most influential scholar in the world right now." As they were all speaking of the ills, dangers and addictive nature of social media, I realized that at my core I'm really a 17yr old. And that I was in as much trouble as every other GenZ. My addiction to instagram (mainly) was at an all time high. I mean I was glued. Fascinated by every poet, designer, recipe, lifecoach, exotic vacation, dance, dog, cat, popstar, fashion, restaurant, actor, you name it I followed it. It's safe to say, I was very diligently following 1600+ accounts. My addiction had become so bad that I was actually commenting on stranger's posts. If Kendal Jenner was on a horse in Brazil at Diplo's estate, I had something to say about it. I had opinions to share on wars, cryto bros, DJ's to divas, bullshit to bullshit and more bullshit. So many opinions to voice, new "friends" to make, likes to give. I seldom looked up. My time was being sucked away and I was aging fast. A young actor friend had even created an impression of me on my phone that brought the house down. I had become a meme. I was having eye strain, headaches, and no kidding, was suffering from iPhone elbow. (It's a thing. Google it. Much like Tennis elbow but without the càche.) And then Jonathan made the point that hit home. He said, addicts, after hours and hours on social media, could not answer the question, "What memory do you have of that time ?" Oh my God. I was filling my brain with so much nothing, retaining nothing and generally feeling nothing. I had literally nothing to show for all the time I was gifting #Zuckerberg. Not even one pleasant memory. And so I came home and deleted facebook, tiktok and deactivated my instagram. I went cold friggin turkey. And it was ducking difficult. All I had left was The New York Times games - Connections, Wordle and The Mini Crossword. And cruelly once you do all three, you have to wait 24hours to do em again. It got so bad that I found myself commenting on people's VENMO payments to other people. (You can actually do that. Ridic, I know. ) Withdrawal is never pretty. It's now been a full week. The good news is I am feeling liberated. I'm not suffering from FOMO, and it's really not as scary as I thought it would be. But if you were wondering why I'm suddenly writing lengthy pieces on LinkedIn, it's not because I just started a company called LBRBCOLLECTIVE, or that I'm a wannabe "thought leader", it's just that this is the only social platform I have left, and I need a fix.
