Being a recent college graduate, finding jobs is more of a hassle than a success. Almost any/every "entry level" job requires some sort of professional or media-industry related experience. My question is, how is this entry-level? I may just be one in a million to fight and pry my way into this industry, no matter how impossible it seems. However, I am also just one in a million who are waiting for a chance, praying for a reply back or a simple acceptance. This is a request, informally, to media industries that are claiming to hire entry-level individuals. Please consider us. Please consider the ones with Bachelor degrees from six to ten months ago. We have dedicated years of our lives to Higher Education, to have it completely stripped from us the second we are "welcomed" into the industry. Please consider this, as I may just be one advocate, but I am speaking for thousands of graduates. PLEASE consider giving us a shot. The more youth you allow in your business, the more energy, determination and DIVERSITY you are welcoming onto your staff. 12 Days of Professional Development Day 8 - “Designing Career Services for the Future” virtual forum from the Chronicle of Higher Education, hosted by Bridget Burns from the University Innovation Alliance #12daysofprofessionaldevelopment   The fundamentals of a career services office are good, but the design needs to be re-evaluated. What if career services offices were designed around the students’ exact needs? This webinar engaged in a deep dive into what things we can do now to help make a bigger impact on students’ career growth and experiences while they are in college. Here are some of my takeaways:   💡 Make career development a real and serious experience for students. The future of equity is the classroom. It is the one place that every student goes. 💡 Career Services can’t just be an opt-in service. Career is not an add-on thing. It needs to be a part of the entire student experience including Orientation, student employment, and the classroom. 💡 The Career Services office should have a wide-reaching and a branded vision to help promote and connect all students with the career information. 💡 Employer demand is growing for students with diverse identities. 💡 Skills are rising in value. We should not just use major, GPA, and school to determine students' quality and value. 💡 Faculty should get to know the Career Services office because together they are helping students to recognize that their specific majors (and the skills learned within those programs) are employable, thus strengthening the overall students in the different academic programs. 💡 When you create more tailored solutions and programs for students who are from similar diverse identities that help them meet with alumni and employers, the students start to realize that other people have done this before and they are willing to help. 💡 Students are their biggest advocate. Let’s train them on how to build up their voices and connect with leadership on their career development needs.   This is just the beginning of the career development process and incorporating this into everything that we do.   ❔ Questions to think about: 1️⃣ Employers need to be involved in the career development process. How do we, as Career Services, help make it easier for them to get to campus, train, and network with our students? Employers have goals to connect with their communities. An interesting article about the demand for, and benefits of, undergraduate work placements for businesses. Apart from the value for money argument (cheaper than grads, and with 2 years of study under their belts), undergraduate placement schemes are beneficial to businesses for many reasons, including: ·     Building talent pool – securing talent as early as possible, gaining an edge over competitors ·     Placement students make better future hires with their year of in-company work experience ·     Diversity - placement cohorts are reportedly more diverse than graduate cohorts so companies can use them as part of their diversity strategy ·     Employer brand - placements students return to campus as brand ambassadors for their employer (assuming they have a good experience) Plus we undergraduates are keen, eager to learn, to impress, and to succeed in order to enhance our future career opportunities – what’s not to like?! https://lnkd.in/eYG-Ekry

The Class of 2024, aka the COVID Cohort, is graduating college and entering the job market. Where and what jobs are they applying to? Handshake surveyed 2600+ students from 616 institutions who are graduating with a bachelor's degree. Here are a few stats: Cities attracting the most application? 🔸NYC 🔸Washington DC 🔸Salt Lake City Biggest Drop in Applications (YOY)? 🔸Texas-based cities 🔸Seattle 🔸Atlanta What industries are new grads applying to? ✔️Government 7.4% ✔️ Manufacturing 6% ✔️ Healthcare 4% 👍Employer branding matters. 75% read reviews of an employer before applying. 📌Proximity matters. 80% say being close to family is at least somewhat important to them. Brands hiring, listen up! 🙌 If you are posting a role that is for someone with entry-level experience, look for college students that are applying and interview them! You may think that you'll have to teach them everything, or that they'll be slacking off because they've never worked in the "real world," but I don't think this could be further from the truth. This next generation of college graduates are going to be a force to reckon with in the marketing world. Samantha Christoff is an incredible example with her resume for poppi. Unique, genuine, and iconic. These college grads are taking things to the next level, they know how these social media apps work & they grew up using them since they were teenagers (or younger).
