Excited to welcome Coldcart into the Behind Genius Ventures portfolio! Coldcart, a perishable logistics software company, was founded by CEO Jason Park, who previously started and scaled Allstate Identity Protection from zero to $100 million ARR, and Blue Apron founder and former CEO Matt Salzberg. Honored that Jason Park let us squeeze in at the last minute to their oversubscribed seed round led by Collide Capital & including Great North Ventures, Alumni Ventures. The opportunity is enormous - in 2023 alone, U.S. companies across industrial, food, pharma, and sciences shipped approximately 3 billion perishable parcels – spending over $76 billion in warehousing, packaging, and transportation costs. Part of our enterprise thesis at Behind Genius is backing "clipboard companies" - verticalized companies serving mission critical purposes in spaces that still use clipboards to operate. Helping food, science and pharma companies navigate the fragmented perishable logistics space, Coldcart's platform reduces perishable logistics costs by 15-50% per shipment and refundable shipments by 40-60%. Side note: no book has blown my mind recently like Nicola Twilley's Frostbite, a book I picked up in Palo Alto recently on my way to lunch with Pankaj Kedia & shared with Jason, which is a journey through time and many refrigerators to share the inside scoop on the artificial cryosphere we've built to house our food, pharma, and many other surprising things. Celcius Logistics Solutions Pvt Ltd, a cold-chain marketplace, has raised INR 40 crore in a pre-Series B funding round led by IvyCap Ventures Advisors Private Limited, with participation from Mumbai Angels and Caret Capital. This funding follows a Series A round of INR 100 crore in April 2023, also led by IvyCap Ventures. The fresh capital will be used to expand Celcius’s Transportation Management System (TMS) and Warehouse Management System (WMS), aiming to reach over 500 cities within the next year. Celcius Logistics connects shippers and transporters, providing comprehensive cold chain solutions, including last-mile and hyperlocal delivery. Founder and CEO Swarup Bose highlighted that the platform addresses operational inefficiencies in India’s cold-chain ecosystem, particularly benefiting the food and pharma industries. The technology-driven platform ensures real-time monitoring and analytics, reducing wastage and enhancing seamless delivery of perishable goods. Matsmart sources and resells excess #merchandise that #traditional retailers are unable to purchase in order to address the problem with waste in the #food supply chain. Something we heard earlier this year was the lack of funding for logistics startup companies. Cold storage provider Lineage is no startup, but it is worth noting that the $4.4 billion raised in its recent IPO is the largest for a company making its stock market debut this year. We could say this is a big win for the logistics industry as a whole. Why are investors so optimistic about Lineage? One reason is since launching their first warehouse in 2008, they have grown through 116 acquisitions which has helped them climb to $5.3B in revenue in 2023. Today they operate nearly one-third of the temperature-controlled warehouse space in the U.S. But also the market timing couldn’t happen at a better moment. Demand for perishable items storage across the cold storage supply chain has exploded. Frozen food sales in the U.S. are up 33% in 2023 vs. 2019. And those who have worked in grocery stores and restaurants know how much food is wasted before it is eaten. Therefore, cold storage is there to help with spoilage and extend the expiration before it is served to the consumer.  

Online grocery platform Everli, once valued at over €450m, is being sold for just €1 to an unknown buyer after facing a liquidity crisis and failing to raise fresh funding. According to Sifted, Everli's backers have fully written down their investment in the company. The buyer is willing to assume the startup's liabilities and invest in the company to rescue its operations. This comes after Brussels-based investment firm Verlinvest, which had been set to lead a new round of financing, decided not to support Everli further. Veho, a last-mile delivery startup, is set to expand its Midwest market presence by launching operations in Detroit and Columbus, Ohio, later this summer. This move, driven by a 300% year-over-year revenue increase from retail and apparel shippers, will extend Veho's next-day delivery services to 44 U.S. markets and add 5.3 million people to its coverage area. Co-Founder and CEO Itamar Zur emphasized that this expansion aligns with Veho's strategy to increase efficiency and enhance customer experience as it continues to challenge industry giants like FedEx and UPS.
