This is a helpful visual! It also shows why the disruption of white supremacy culture is so important. In my last position I was an Advocacy Supervisor - I supervised Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) who advocated for children in the foster care system. I had one CASA in particular who was advocating for their case child to be adopted by their caregivers (child was Hispanic, caregivers caucasian). The CASA was writing formal reports for the Juvenile Court in which they were clearly advocating against the biological parents (who had been incarcerated at the time of the child’s removal - but had been released after serving their time) and making statements about the caregivers being better providers, being able to give the child what they needed etc. This kind of thinking is dangerous, in my opinion. Black and brown children in the foster care system are not “up for grabs” waiting for white middle class families to give them “better” lives. Since when is white middle class suburban life the gold standard? Hasn’t it produced plenty of school shooters (Columbine, STEM Highlands Ranch, etc)? Unfortunately, I lost my job as an Advocacy Supervisor for pointing this out to leadership (as well as other ethical issues) who chose defensiveness over doing the racial equity work. Now, as a Family Minister, I have the platform to advocate for not just the children, but for the entire family. Research shows us that children do best when they are able to remain with their biological parents or kinship group. 46% of children in foster care in San Diego County are Hispanic. The majority of those removals were for general neglect - which is failure to adequately supervise, failure to provide the child with adequate food, clothing, shelter or medical treatment, inability to provide care due to mental illness, developmental disability or substance abuse. What if we spent our time SUPPORTING families? What if we did the systems change work to address the inequities that stem from what is shown on this chart?
