If you’re a board member, sorry —
But it’s not enough to simply show up to meetings and listen to reports.
Here’s my take having been appointed to 13 boards:
To truly contribute, you need to come prepared, ask questions, and share your insights.
One piece of advice I always give to new board members is this: Don't be afraid to speak up. If you don't understand something, ask for clarification.
If you have an idea or concern, voice it.
You’re there because of your unique experiences and perspectives.
So, be choosy about the boards you join.
Look for organizations that align with your passions and where your talents can make a real difference.
When you find that right fit, you'll naturally be more invested and engaged in the work.
The most fulfilling board experiences are those where I feel like I'm actively contributing to the organization's success.
So, if you're considering joining a board for the first time or looking to make a greater impact in your current role, remember:
Study the materials, be present, and don't hesitate to speak up.
That's how you go from being a passive participant to an active and valued member of the team.
