Businesses are missing the point on sustainability. 🌍❌
After 2 days at B Lab UK's Louder than Words festival and Sustainability LIVE this week, here’s what the Shape History team learned:
🚫 Get Serious or Go Home: The message at both events was clear: sustainability isn’t optional. It’s time for businesses to step up, get real, and ditch the greenwashing. Half-hearted efforts won’t cut it.
🌍 Sustainability or Spin?: We loved hearing Deb Caldow (Ralls) and Dave Lütkenhaus from Diageo talk about how they're making it easier for consumers to choose better. Plus, Netflix sets a high bar by embedding sustainability into their culture—break those values, and there are real consequences. But let’s be honest: too many brands are still stuck in feel-good buzzwords with zero substance. Talk is cheap!
👥 People Over Profits: It’s not just about the planet—it’s about people. The most impactful companies are those genuinely committed to both social and environmental justice. Purpose-driven business isn’t a trend, it’s the future. If you're not lifting up communities while tackling sustainability, you're 👏missing 👏the 👏point.👏
🤝 Break Down Silos, Build Partnerships: Sustainability shouldn’t be stuck in a corner! Liverpool Football Club shared that teaming up with competitors can align sustainability with business goals. B Corp Festival showcased this perfectly, bringing together bold organisations to swap ideas and strategies. Smashing those silos drives real change—together!
🚀 Embrace the Journey: Sustainability is an evolving process. We don't need all the answers now, but we must start the journey. The game is constantly changing, and so should our approach. Communicate openly about your progress, challenges, and goals—without making unsubstantiated claims or staying silent.
The time for half-measures is over! 🌟 Ready to get real about sustainability and how you talk about it? Slide into our DMs 💌😉
