🌍 It's Earth Overshoot Day August 1 marks #EarthOvershootDay - the day when our demand for ecological resources exceeds what Earth can regenerate in a year. What does it mean? It means that since the early 1970s, humanity has lived on an ecological credit card. In 1971, Earth Overshoot Day was December 25. Today, it’s August 1. That’s not a good sign. Let’s face it: if we stay on this path, future generations are going to have it rough. We already have it rough. Imagine this intensifying. Yesterday was Earth Overshoot Day 😔 Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. So we have already exceeded what our planet can regnerate this year - we are deeply in planetary debt. And with raging wars, human displacement and intense suffering of other-than-human species, genocides, children dying in wars and egomaniacal fanatics dictating world politics, it may be difficult to talk about love, compassion and community. I found solace in Regina Linke's remarkable book 'The Oxherd Boy' and one statement from the book - "Sometimes you can only do a small, small thing. And that can make all the difference." What small, small thing can we do that can make a difference to us, our families, our organisations, communities and our planet? This year, August 1 will mark Earth Overshoot Day, the day that humanity’s demand for ecological resources exceeds the resources Earth can regenerate within that year. Over the decades, the ecological and carbon footprint of humans has gradually increased, all while Earth’s biocapacity, i.e. its ability to regenerate resources has diminished significantly. That has led to Earth Overshoot Day arriving earlier and earlier, moving from as late as December 30 in 1970. In the pandemic year of 2020, it did move back somewhat significantly from July 29 to August 22. But, despite 2023 representing a slight positive shift from 2022's July 28, the trend was one of stagnation rather than progress 🙁

This year, the most advanced species that ever existed on Earth celebrates #earthovershootday on 1st August. "Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. We maintain this deficit by liquidating stocks of ecological resources and accumulating waste, primarily carbon dioxide in the atmosphere." - Earth Overshoot To cut things short, the significance of this day can be understood by an analogy of humans. When there are limits to what humans can do in a limited span of time, so does this Earth. 🌏 Natural resources are becoming scarce at an increasing rate because the current rate of consumption is far exceeding the rate of self-replenishment of these resources. The Earth Overshoot Day serves as a reminder to the human conscience that whatever resources we are consuming from this day forward are actually loaned from the resources meant to be utilised by the coming generations, provided existing resource-intensive development patterns. Earth Overshoot Day Read my extended blog post here: https://lnkd.in/e2rCCmNV I always find it very unfortunate when people and organisations simplify this deeply sad day into: ‘we have used up resources for an entire year, we are now living at the expense of future generations’. This is my response to that: And not just at the expense of future generations. The rich western countries, which had their #OvershootDay much earlier, are living at the expense of poor countries. Anyone with an ecological footprint larger than 1 earth is a ruthless thief, both of the now and the future, both of your fellow earthlings and your children and grandchildren. Moreover, it is not just about resource use. It is also about creating far more waste and the horrific pollution of air, soil and water than what the earth (and humanity!) can ever handle. Raw materials may still be extractable elsewhere or replaceable with other raw materials, the incredible mess we have made of it is not. Finally, 'just mentioning' species extinction... The ecological footprint doesn’t include al planetary boundaries...
