The Middle East is at a crossroads when it comes to sustainable global trade. With pressing environmental concerns and the need for sustainable development, the region presents unique challenges and opportunities. Challenges such as oil dependency, water scarcity, and environmental impacts from fast-paced urbanization must be at the core of sustainable trade initiatives' focus. However, the Middle East also presents key opportunities, including renewable energy potential through solar and wind powers, incentives to support green technologies development projects, and changes in demand patterns and adaptive route to market strategies. Achieving all this requires concerted efforts from public and private actors in the region, and international institutions. Public-private partnerships and cross-sector collaborations can drive innovation and knowledge; enhancements can be brought through international best practices and global benchmarking exercises subject to local adaptations. 🌱💡The latest briefing paper from the Australia-Vietnam Green Economy Program, authored by Climateworks Centre is now out!

In my last months at Climateworks I was grateful to be a part of the Australia-Vietnam Green Economy Program, a joint initiative between Climateworks Centre and Asialink supported by DFAT to explore opportunities for deepened investment in Vietnam's low-carbon transition. In this report, with the support of my colleagues Trang Nguyen and Ceren Ayas, PhD, I lay out the significant potential for strengthened Australian support for Vietnam's energy transition as the country continues to advance its enabling environment for clean energy uptake ⚡. TLDR: In terms of keeping in sight the Paris Agreement goal of limiting warming to 1.5, climate-centered integration between Australia and Southeast Asia is a major (and underrated) piece of the puzzle due to our region's growing emissions footprint, and our support for the region's energy transition is absolutely imperative, especially as it currently faces outsized costs.

Sustainability: China will issue 70 national standards for carbon footprints, energy efficiency and consumption as well as carbon capture, utilization and storage in 2024. The country aims to build 100 carbon emission management standardization pilots in 2025.

In this Briefing Paper, Emily Lydgate, L. Alan Winters, Sunayana Sasmal, Xinyan (Michel) Zhao, James Bacchus and Amrita Saha highlight some of the ramifications of the US-EU green subsidies race for developed country allies of the EU and US, such as the UK, and for low-income countries supplying many of the critical raw materials to make the transition to electric vehicles possible. They argue that medium-sized countries, for whom winning a subsidy race is out of the question, must be highly strategic. Taking the example of the UK, they propose four guidelines for such a strategy. They also argue that critical raw materials extraction must be understood through a broader sustainable development lens. Indeed, the more inclusive discussions about green subsidies and supply chains can be, the more likely that the low carbon transition can be done equitably and quickly. To this end, they also advocate broader cooperation on green subsidies, including through discussion at the WTO.
