Access to clean water is becoming increasingly challenging for a significant portion of the global population, and new research indicates this problem could worsen over the coming decades. 🌊 It's Water Saving Week! 🌊 Our Regional Water Resources Plan published in December relies heavily on demand management to safeguard future water supplies in Eastern England. We need demand-side action to reduce the projected supply-demand deficit by almost half, an impressive 333 million litres per day (Ml/d) by 2050. That’s almost four-times the yield of the proposed Fens Reservoir!  Our demand-side strategy focuses on water conservation through the integration of government policies, leakage control, smart metering, and behavioural change in households. We also need businesses, industry and public sector buildings to use a lot less potable water too. The government target is 9% less by 2038. The #Gingin area is an important #agriculture region in #WA, and its aquatic systems sustain diverse communities of flora and fauna, with a species richness of #fish and crayfish amongst the highest in south-west WA. Gingin is also one of the areas of WA most impacted by #ClimateChange, with climate projections indicating #rainfall will continue to decline into the future. The new Gingin groundwater and surface water allocation plans: 2024 evaluation statement, includes several updates to management arrangements in the Gingin surface and groundwater allocation plans to help manage risks to Gingin’s water resources and the significant values they support. 

Colorado State University research suggests that a concerning scenario may unfold by 2071: almost half of the 204 fresh water basins studied across the United States might struggle to fulfil monthly water demands. This revelation underscores a pressing issue in water resource management, particularly as Earth's freshwater reserves remain limited and under increasing strain. With only 2.5% of the planet's water comprising freshwater, crucial for sustaining life, the majority of this vital resource exists underground. But, this finite freshwater supply faces mounting pressure due to the expanding global population. The reliance on freshwater from surface sources like rivers and reservoirs, as well as underground reservoirs like aquifers, is important for meeting the water needs of over 85% of Americans. While the planet won't completely deplete its water supplies, the prospect of nations clashing over access to this vital resource is a legitimate concern. However, such a scenario is not inevitable. Countries have the capability to form joint agreements that honor our global water resources. Already, some nations are setting examples in this regard, though there's still considerable progress to be made. Yearly, we witness the impact of extreme weather through water phenomena—flooding in certain areas, droughts in others, with all regions becoming more susceptible to the challenges of water scarcity. It's also clear that the repercussions of such weather extremes will impact the most impoverished and vulnerable populations the hardest.

Water shortage and water quality will be key challenges goung forward. We (INOPSYS) focus on the on-site treatment of hazardous wastewater and on removal of micro pollutants. This is the first step to be able to reuse these side streams and avoid transport and incineration.
