I know all of you don't follow #militarytransition like we do at PreVeteran but assure you that this same article written by Penn State University, with essentially the same content, has been written about repeatedly over the past 20 years. What does this say about the current TAP-led system and, more importantly, what can we do about it? Let's chat... ☕ If you've been following PreVeteran, you know that we are very critical of the current program of record, TAP. Not because it does not try hard—it does—but because the program is structurally flawed for these simple reasons (to name a few). ❌ It does not paint a picture of how vastly different the military environment is from private sector environment (this leads the service member to believe they are "good to go" and that companies will be "clamoring to hire them" upon completion of their service, which is of course, false). ❌ As a result, the service member is not aware of the significant change they need to make to themselves to be successful in preparing for the very different private sector environment Want evidence. Take a look at this section from the article...because it captures it all nicely in one paragraph. Article link in first comment. 👇 “Post-9/11 veterans, those who served during the global War on Terror in Iraq and Afghanistan and have transitioned to civilian life face substantial risk of underemployment,” said Katie Davenport, assistant research professor at the Clearinghouse and lead author on the study. “This issue partly arises because many employers struggle to understand how military skills, particularly leadership, translate to civilian jobs. Also, veterans can feel pressure to accept jobs quickly after they leave military service and may not be as selective as they should be.” Now, let's look at that paragraph from the context of what I said above about the program of record having structural problems. 👉 "Post-9/11 veterans have transitioned to civilian life face substantial risk of underemployment." ✅ Why? The current program of record lulls them into thinking they'll be good to go...until they find out they are unprepared for the very different private sector 👉 "This issue partly arises because many employers struggle to understand how military skills, particularly leadership, translate to civilian jobs." ✅ Why? The current program of record and overall apparatus wants the system to work by having the employer have to change to acclimate to the service member. Does this make sense at all? Nope. The burden should be on the service member to acclimate to the private sector before they separate or retire...the PreVeteran way. 😎 👉 "Veterans can feel pressure to accept jobs quickly after they leave the military service and may not be as selective as they should be." ✅ Why? What are some of the top concerns and challenges that Veterans face when exiting the military? This survey released by the VFW hits on non-health related concerns that Veterans face. We will hit health concerns in another post as that deserves it's own focused attention. The top challenges list in this survey are not surprising. Here are some from the list: - Finding a job - 33% - Parting ways with my friends in the military - 28% - Finding a purposeful career - 28% - Absence of familiar routine/structure - 23% - Pursuing educational goals - 15% - Adjusting to providing basic necessities (e.g., food, clothing, housing) - 15% - Lack of financial support - 14% Do you see the common theme? This survey states that it takes an average of four months for Veterans to find employment. What it doesn't state is whether or not the employment matches the Veteran's desired career field. Many Veterans have to take the first available employment option and also forgo the education path so that they can provide for themselves, their families, and just the basic necessities. What about those that are wanting/needing a career change due to a disability, non-transferrable skill, or maybe that medic that has seen their fair share of blood. It's okay to make the change. What's not okay is that they have to do it alone or they have to make the hard decision to take the first available "job" to provide the basics or they get that "job" in the field they were trying to get away from. Want a glimpse into what life is like as a military spouse? I had a conversation once about how military spouses don’t really know strangers. We meet, quickly pick up on what our spouses do, where our kids were born, places we lived, and shared experiences like deployments and PCS’s. The truth is, we don’t really get that chance to “friend date” because of how little time we have at a location. It’s much like picking lunch at a restaurant- “this one seems like a good choice, now we’re friends”. So this past weekend we turned our monthly neighborhood book club into a surprise bachelorette party for Katie. She moved to this area as a fiancé and they had the typical courthouse wedding because they were expecting OCONUS orders. Of the dozen of us in this picture, only 2 of us are not moving this summer. That means 10 of my closest friends from the past year will be starting life over at new locations by the end of the summer. Through the power of social media and other friend connections I’ve been able to virtually meet 3 spouses who are incoming to my neighborhood before they have even arrived. This situation isn’t uncommon. We meet our people, we make the most of it, then we move and start over. And while this may be more around starting over our community this summer, a PCS has a greater impact than that. 1 will PCS within weeks of her due date 1 is leaving a job that cannot go OCONUS with them 1 is PCSing with a newborn 2 have jobs waiting for them 3 will have kids starting for the first time 8 of them will have spouses walking into KD positions that will be high op tempo and stressful 4 are exploring the option of doing a PPM And all 10 PCS’s are 95% being planned and handled by the military spouse. #MilitarySpouses #PCS #moving #relocation

As my journey in the military comes to a close, I stand at a crossroads, facing the vast and uncertain world of civilian life. The transition from military to civilian life is an experience filled with mixed emotions – excitement for the new opportunities ahead, yet apprehension about the unknown. The Department of Defense recently stated that service members are better prepared for their transition to civilian life today than any other time in history. While this may be true, especially considering we have access to more transition services than ever before, one of the biggest challenges for me is figuring out what to do next. The military lifestyle, with its structured environment and clear hierarchy, is quite different from the civilian world, where paths are diverse and less defined. This freedom of choice, while liberating, can also be daunting. I'm taking this time to self-reflect, reassess my skills, and explore my passions that were put on hold. It's a journey of self-discovery, where I'm learning to translate my military skills into civilian terms and finding out how they align with various career paths. Another challenge is adapting to a new lifestyle and culture. The camaraderie and brotherhood of the military are unique, and finding a similar sense of community in the civilian world takes time and effort. As I navigate through this transition, I'm reminded that change, although challenging, is also an opportunity for growth and new experiences. I'm excited to explore the possibilities that lie ahead and to build a fulfilling post-military career. For those who have walked this path, I welcome your advice and stories of transition. Key Insights on Veteran Reintegration Excerpts and lessons from my 23 years in (and then out, and then in again) the Army coupled with my Master’s level research. 1. The Hero's Journey: Veterans undergo significant transformation during service, similar to a hero's journey (Joseph Campbell), but face challenges reconnecting with their pre-deployment or pre-initial training selves upon returning home. 2. Purpose and Identity: Many veterans struggle with a loss of purpose after military service, as they transition from a mission-focused environment to civilian life, often feeling disconnected from their previous identities. The new “why” begins to look smaller and less important than the military mission. 3. Community and Connection: The importance of community and cannot be overstated. Veterans benefit greatly from engaging with fellow veterans and organizations that foster camaraderie and shared experiences. 4. Reinforcement Through Peer Support: Peer-led programs and informal gatherings often resonate well and can be more successful with veterans than traditional, clinical approaches, providing relatable support and understanding. ( #teamrwb #teamubicon #IAVA #themissioncontinues and so many more) 5. Flexibility in Reintegration Programs: Current programs, like the Yellow Ribbon Program, need adaptation to meet the varying needs of veterans, such as extending follow-up timelines well beyond the 30-90 days post-deployment. 6. Financial Savvy: Financial challenges often arise post-deployment or after discharge. Veterans are encouraged to prioritize saving and budgeting to mitigate potential money issues during reintegration. 7. Education and Employment Barriers: Veterans may encounter obstacles in returning to school or finding suitable employment, particularly if their military service results in perceived gaps in their work history. A deployment or few years on active duty isn’t a resume gap. It’s a boost to better leadership, more confidence, added resilience, and a host of other skills. 8. Ongoing Support Systems: Reintegration is a long-term process. Continued support and check-ins should extend beyond initial programs to ensure veterans' well-being as they adapt to civilian life. The entry is a long stair case, taken a step at a time. The backside is a series of small cliffs to tumble down. 9. Emphasizing Resilience: Veterans possess unique skills and resilience developed through their service. Employers should recognize and leverage these attributes when integrating veterans into the workforce (See #7). 10. Cultural Awareness: Employers and civilians should foster an understanding of military culture and the sacrifices made by veterans to create a supportive environment that encourages open dialogue and connection. Most veterans are not broken; they just see the world differently. 

John's deployment is over, our beautiful baby girl has joined the ranks, and we're happily settled in our new duty station. 🏠👨👩👧👧 We were dealt the military trifecta: deployment, a permanent change of station, and the birth of our second daughter – all within the same 9-month period. 🌪️ Talk about a whirlwind of life experiences! I feel like i've lived 5 years in 2023. For those asking, Daddy got to be part of the birth on FaceTime – a blessing we cherish, knowing it's more than many military families get during deployments. 🤍📱 Another fun fact, the August 2023 super blue moon caused an early delivery. Our blue moon baby came 3 weeks early. Amidst the trifecta of curve balls, I still easily led my team VirtForce until the day I delivered (not on purpose), became a licensed realtor, sold our house, and bought a new one – all while John was bravely serving our country, and I was juggling pregnancy and postpartum challenges. 🏡📈 And let's not forget putting my toddler daughter first, ensuring her happiness and stability needs were met while I solo parented. 🧡👧🏽 Why share all this?
