WE ALL WANT THE SAME THINGS I spent most of last week in Bangkok with a bunch of friends. The street food, the hustle and bustle of the hawkers, the roar of traffic on the streets, and the smorgasbord of tourists from all around the world remain Bangkok-familiar to me, but amidst these flavours, some things also familiar to me bothered me a bit… the same brands, the same retail concepts, the same entertainment options as the other cities in Asia. Globalisation and development has brought a large dose of homogeneity to cities around the world. Shopping malls house Uniqlo, Starbucks, McDonald’s, and the token luxury brands. Hotels have rooftop bars, member lounges with complimentary drinks, and spas providing services at international prices. Everyone is using Tik Tok and taking selfies at the same ‘Insta-spots’. We arrive in foreign lands, but find familiarity everywhere we turn. In the evolution of civilisation, every city has lost a bit of what makes each of them what they are, and becoming more alike. We are now well into what academics term the third era of globalisation, which began at the end of the Cold War in 1991 and countries around the world started trading with one another. Then the last 20 years saw the internet and personal smartphones speed up the globalisation of not just economies, but of cultures. The difference remaining between peoples is the stage of development we are in, which determines what resources we have to pursue those same things, and how we pursue it. Unique traits in different cities exist for sure. We travelled into Bangkok to experience things not available in Singapore. But between these little treats, cities are becoming more and more alike because people do ultimately want the same things.  To have freedom, have options, have fun, be loved, and to be happy. This may sound cliché, but it is important to remember. Whether with colleagues at the work, or the people in our lives.  We all want the same things, we just pursue them in different ways because we have different resources available to us. Keep this in mind the next time you negotiate a deal, manage a difficult stakeholder, or structure a partnership with multiple parties. Find the common grounds. You already know what they are. P.S. I'm surprised that it's only in the top 25, for me it would be No.1 "Singapore is one of the best cities in the world right now". In Time Out's annual survey of best cities to live in Singapore ranked #22 on the list, one of three Asian cities to make it to the top 25 behind Tokyo (#8) and Mumbai (#12). The list is based on Time Out's annual survey of thousands of city-dwellers around the world. Working with Potentia Insight, we spoke to locals to find out what makes their cities great places to live, work and play in, looking at things to do, quality and affordability of food, beauty and cleanliness, sense of community, and much more. We also asked respondents which other city they would most like to live in and combined their views with that of more than 100 Time Out staff writers and editors globally. Singapore impressed respondents with its vibrant food and nightlife scenes (these received 91 percent and 80 percent approval ratings respectively) – and that's not surprising, considering that we're home to some of the best restaurants in the world and truly incredible, affordable hawker eats. Delhi (29 million) and Shanghai (26 million) are actually the second and third most populous cities in the world but both currently sit behind Tokyo's massive 38 million residents. Japan actually has two cities in the top 10, Tokyo and Osaka.
