President @ Vocana | Where Independent Music Thrives

I saw an indie band at their wits end today looking homeless in a parking lot. I was with my family on I85 making a ten hour drive to visit family. We pulled over three hours into the trip at Love's Truck stop for gas and a break. Out of the corner of my eye I see a beat up white van pulling an even worse looking trailer. I knew from experience this was probably a local or newly signed indie band. Sitting on the pavement were four band dudes looking disheveled and exhausted. I introduced myself and asked if they were headed home or to another date on the leg of their tour. The story was sadly familiar, they had broken down two nights prior and missed two shows and now had to drive another 300 miles just to catch up with the tour with no money from missing two gigs. I have heard this story a hundred times or more. I told them to pull their van around to the pump so I could fill it. I told the young tour manager who barely looked 18 to get me one XL each of their shirts and one each of any CD they had. After pumping the gas I handed them $250. They all grabbed me in a huge bear hug. These are the stories nobody hears but should. There are hundreds of these bands criss crossing the US trying to eek out a living doing what they love. It proved to me again why Vocana and other indie platforms are needed to help pay indie artists a fair wage. #music #artist #musician #tour #indie #diy #concert

Neil Sheehan How will Vocana help this band specifically? Where is the revenue model for this band? Genuinely interested as we are all trying to figure this stuff out.

As a 20-year veteran of indie bands, I find this concept inspiring. All of my friends are indie musicians who have navigated the challenges of touring, battling with booking agents, promoters, and unfair bar cuts. They’ve had to learn to code, build websites, EQ a telecaster with too much treble, master albums, build fanbases, and promote their art—all while making ends meet in kitchens, the service industry, high schools, and local government (hey, that’s me). They’ve amassed a wealth of knowledge across many disciplines, yet what’s failing them is the same systemic issues affecting many other industries, like screenwriters and animators. These digital economies of convenience exploit the craft and creators by middlemanning to the public on platforms predicated on the very labor they are exploiting. When considering how to apply solutions at scale, what changes to current models and business practices within the independent music industry could improve the livability for everyone involved, including the artists and those who support them?

yes!! you have a good heart. This is why I am a strong advocate of getting paid before a show and to establish a strong performance history at professional paying venues (I.E. Jones Beach Theatre, Madison Square Garden) with the help of strong promoters, because bars & clubs are very exploitative & it doesn't help talented indie artists to develop a strong performance history involving lucrative deals. Alot of indie musicians are not getting paid & it doesn't have parity with the cost of living especially in an expensive place like NYC

It’s a reminder of the challenges many bands face on the road and how small acts of generosity can make a huge difference.

Dedicated to be out there at all right now , between ridiculously thin margins , and kind of generally dead culture overall. Not much fun or profit to be made. Unless youre some hollywood agenda bot.

Great story and way to help them lift their spirits. I'm sure their next show was one of the best they ever played due to your kindness.
