In hiring many Veterans transitioning to the private sector, I’ve realized how invaluable the skills developed during service are in the civilian workplace. The military instills discipline, leadership, adaptability, and a strong work ethic—qualities that are critical to success in any industry. **Leadership** is about more than just directing a team; it's about motivating, mentoring, and ensuring that everyone is working toward a common goal. The ability to make decisions under pressure and remain calm in the face of adversity is something the military teaches you from day one. **Adaptability** is another key skill. The military prepares you to handle unexpected challenges with poise and resourcefulness. In the fast-paced world of business, being able to pivot quickly and effectively is crucial. **Teamwork** in the military is non-negotiable. You learn to trust your team, communicate effectively, and work together to achieve objectives. These are the same principles that drive success in the private sector. Finally, the **discipline** and **work ethic** that are ingrained in every service member form the foundation of reliability and consistency—two traits that employers value highly. As part of #ArmedForces week, today marks specific recognition of those in our Reserve Armed Forces. You might even spot some wearing their military uniform to their civilian work today, where safe and practicable. Reservists are commonly cited as "twice the citizen" as they choose to support the Armed Forces in their spare time, typically during the evenings and weekends, but occasionally full-time when the country needs additional support. I was an Army Reservist for 13 years. I had a huge amount of opportunities presented to me which helped my professional development, which, in turn, my employers were able to benefit from. Whether that was transferring ideas/best practice/working models to/from the military and civilian worlds, or in the training & experience I gained in leadership and operational roles. Life is short, I don’t stress anything or anyone.  𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲? Watching the growth of young servicemembers. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮? It’s a chance to show service member that people do care and remember the sacrifices given for the freedom the country enjoys. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲? Support groups that support veterans. Not all who have served get out better than when they joined, so we need to support those, that served and are now in need.

Between human resources, diverse #talent, and mission focussness, there’s a binding element. Delivering #results, growing your company leadership, and fulfilling the need for a motivated culture can stem from the same element. Implementiation of a great military talent and engagement strategy, will serve as a winning process for all of these important things. I’m extremely happy that when I built #military programs, a #Veterans Committee, and developed a winning team to stay connected with our service men and women internally and externally, we saw what it can do. ✅ Offer #Opportunity ✅ Driving success with military mindsets ✅ Bridging a transition gap ✅ Contributing to a solution, not a problem ✅ Diversifying our talent ✅ Optimizing ways to build cohesion ✅ Making employees an important stakeholder ✅ Being powered by people These are some of the many outcomes we saw, to include being a known unrivaled culture in the military space with home improvement. Together, we built a pathway for veterans, but together, we will pave a freeway for our heroes and their families. The work is being done! A special salute to Lieutenant Colonel Don Weyler, US Army (Ret.) for authoring the critically important section of our new book, Win The Job & Thrive In A Multigenerational Workplace, focused on helping military Veterans make a successful transition to the civilian sector. Having grown up at the United States Military Academy at West Point with my dad, Colonel Harold Beal, and having attended the United States Military Academy Preparatory School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, the #military has always been a passion in my family. My brother and sister were Colonels who served during a time of combat in Iraq. With that, me and my co-authors, Frank Kovacs, CRISC CDPSE and Kadeer A. Porter, M.S., are honored that Lieutentant Colonel Don Weyler authored this valuable section of the book. I had the great honor and pleasure to start my career as a logistics officer, right out of college. I had opportunities to lead organizations, support operations and plan and execute process improvements to provide the best possible support to our service members in combat, peace keeping operations and here in the U.S. During that career, I learned that the military is a great #leadership laboratory and provides service members with a career map of various options to advance careers and provide maximum value to their respective service. As I began the transition to a civilian career, I realized that unlike the military, there is not one cohesive map. There is not a clear direction. The transition can be daunting. In fact, it could be your next “War story”, but it doesn’t have to be.

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀. At Whitetree, we see the huge benefits from recruiting ex-military personnel. The breadth of aptitude, skills, and training that are transferable and add real value to our business is what makes us who we are. We currently employ 19 colleagues who have either served in the forces or continue to offer their skills as a Reservist or Forces Volunteer. Recognising Armed Forces Week is crucial to us for several reasons: 1) Armed Forces Week is a time to express our gratitude and appreciation for the courageous men and women who have served in the armed forces. This week allows us to honour their sacrifices, dedication, and unwavering commitment to protecting our nation. 2) By recognising Armed Forces Week, we can raise awareness about the challenges faced by veterans and their families long after they have left the military. It helps shed light on the importance of supporting and assisting them in their transition to civilian life; it’s not easy being a civilian! 3) At Whitetree Group, we take great pride in our commitment to supporting our veterans. Serivce member issues and social media. PART 3 1. I have no freedom in the military (not my words). a. Let’s be transparent and honest, yes the military has its own set of laws, rules, regulations, and policies. Our operations, actions, and initiatives may be tactical(locally) executed, but most of strategic(transregional and global) affects. Therefore, the Services must maintain a higher standard of morales, values, and rules (laws) than our civilian counterparts. There CAN be a perception that this imposes more restraints on service members. However, let’s take another perspective. Using Jocko as a source, “discipline equals freedom”. What does that mean to me? It means that the more discipline, initiative and intestinal fortitude that someone displays, the less micro-management is placed upon them. Boundaries and rules still exist! This allows organizational leaders to trust in their subordinates while fostering critical thinking, which allows younger organizational members the flexibility to solve problems own their own while meeting objectives. b. Secondly, your level of maturity and performance will directly affect your freedom. Case in point; On the military’s dime (due to operational requirements) I’ve been to Dubai, South Korea, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Poland, Germany, Ukraine, Spain, Bulgaria, Belgium, Panama and had the opportunity to interact with Senior members from partner nations, the USGOV, and developed long lasting friendships. My most memorable experiences have been visiting Dachau, Aushwitz (twice), the Nuremberg Trail courtroom, the Ardennes Forest and various other historical sights. Discipline Equals Freedom!
