On this day in 1975, Steven Speilberg's "Jaws" hit theatres. To honor this classic film, we give you: Job Hunting: The Jaws Edition š¦š¬ Do you ever feel like searching for a new job is eerily similar to the plot of "Jaws"? Stay with me here: šThe Calm Before the Storm: Youāre enjoying your current job, just like those folks having a peaceful day at Amity Island. Everythingās sunny, but deep down, you know something big is lurking out there. šThe First Sighting: You get the first inkling that you need a changeāa few missed deadlines, a nagging boss, or that dreadful Monday morning feeling. Much like that first shark sighting, itās alarming but not enough to send you running just yet. š¤Denial Phase: "It's probably just a rough patch," you tell yourself. Similar to the townās mayor insisting itās safe to go back in the water. Spoiler: Itās not. š¦The Frenzy: The realization hitsāyour job is sucking the life out of you! The panic starts. Youāre frantically updating your resume, much like Brody calling for backup after that first big attack. āForming a Plan: You gather your resourcesānetwork contacts, LinkedIn tutorials, and pep talks from friends and family. Itās your very own crew of Brody, Hooper, and Quint, ready to face the unknown. šThe Hunt Begins: You dive into the job market waters, cautiously applying to positions. Each application feels like tossing chum into the sea, hoping to attract the right opportunity without attracting too many rejections. š¤The Big Interview: Finally, you land an interview with a dream company. This is your showdown with the great white shark. Youāre prepared, confident, and ready to nail it. šSurviving the Battle: The interview was tough, but you survived. Now, itās all about waiting for the offer, just like waiting to see if that shark finally takes the bait. šVictory: You got the job! Time to celebrate your hard-earned success and sail into a new adventure, just like Brody paddling to shore after vanquishing Jaws. Cue the triumphant music! Job hunting might feel like a terrifying swim in shark-infested waters, but remember: with preparation, persistence, and a bit of courage, you can come out on top. It also helps to have a great relationship with a Sherpa recruiter! Let's dive into the not-so-glamorous world of job hunting, a realm that oddly resembles the tumultuous dating scene ā and trust me, it's been quite the rollercoaster! Ah, job hunting: the only time in life when "It's not you, it's me" gets flipped on its head and you're supposed to take it like a champ. You tweak your resume for the umpteenth time, wondering if "Ninja at Multitasking" might finally catch someone's eye, or if it's too 2010. You craft cover letters like love letters, pouring your heart out to someone who might not even give you a second glance. And let's not forget the joy of interviews, where you're expected to sell yourself like the last avocado at brunch. But here's the kicker: every ghosted application, every "we've gone in a different direction" is just the universe's way of saying, "Not your circus, not your monkeys." So, dust off your ego, grab a scoop (or tub) of ice cream, and remember: the right gig is out there. It's just playing hard to get. In the meantime, revel in the small victories, like not having to wear real pants for phone interviews, and keep your spirits high. After all, job hunting is the art of hearing 'no' until you finally get that sweet, sweet 'yes'. So, keep your chin up, your network close and your favorite snack closer, and don't forget to hit the gym! Your dream job is out there, probably just stuck in traffic. #30daystats

šš» Embracing the Spookiness of Halloween in Job Hunting š»š As Halloween approaches, it's the perfect time to recognize the uncanny similarities between this eerie holiday and the job hunt. šš§āļø The Unknown: Just like navigating through a haunted house, job seekers often step into the unknown. My personal belief when it comes to job hunting: treat yourself often! It doesnāt have to be pricey or even cost anything at all. But after a long day of applying to jobs or after an interview, you should do something for yourself to ārefill your cupā so to speak. Here are some good and easy ways to treat yourself after applying to jobs, finishing up an interview, fixing up your portfolio, etc: š play your favorite video game (Katamari is my relaxing game of choice!) š go for a walk (easier said than done depending on your location, sure, but worth mentioning!) š binge your favorite show guilt-free (you earned it!) š watch your favorite movie from childhood š make your favorite snack š hang out with friends š take a warm, relaxing shower š listen to a beloved CD while reading a book š go to the park / beach and unwind š okay go ahead, buy that thing on your eBay / Steam wishlist (if you have the disposable income to do so, of course!) Most importantly ā unplug! Youāve done great work for the day, so silence those notifications, put your phone face down, and let your brain and body rest. Youāve earned it! Me, personally? I love a pretty latte, but I save those for an after interview treat āļø How do you treat yourself after a long day of job hunting? #openforwork #greenbannergang #openfornewopportunities #lookingforwork #lookingforopportunities #jobhunt #jobhunt2023 #jobhunting #jobhunter #jobhuntingtips #treatyourself

Yesterday I had an ephiphany and thought I would share, as Iām sure many of my fellow #jobseekers can empathize š«¶š¾ After a great conversation with my aunt and taking the time to reflect on my job hunting journey and experience thus far, I came to the realization that were in the early dating phase. Let me explainā¦š š¬ "Job Hunting: A Tale of 50 First Dates" š š Searching for that perfect job can be quite the adventure, and today, I'm drawing a unique comparison to the heartwarming movie "50 First Dates"! š„ š Just like Lucy waking up with a clean slate each day, we approach interviews with renewed hope and enthusiasm, ready to make a lasting impression. š¼ But sometimes, the job market (especially in its current extremely competitive and highly saturated state) can feel like Henry's uphill struggle to win Lucy's heart each day. š¢ We face rejections and challenges, making us wonder if we'll ever find that perfect match. š šŖš¾ Yet, like Henry, we pick ourselves up (in my opinion this has proven to be the hardest part of the task, but extremely commendable, as it exudes our resilence, dedication, and drive) dust off, and learn from each experience, growing stronger and wiser with every setback. šŖ“ š Our job search journey may feel like a series of "first dates," where we need to adapt, stay persistent, and demonstrate our unique value every time. šļø āØEmbracing the spirit of Lucy's optimism, we believe that the right opportunity is out there, and with each interview, we get one step closer to our dream job! š Let's support each other on this incredible ride, sharing our stories, tips, and motivation to keep moving forward! šš¾ šš¾Remember, just like dating, job hunting is a two way street. Leverage this time to gain insights that will allow you to determine if itās a mutually good fit. This makes it an even playing field and allows you to gain some power and confidence back. You are EQUALLY as much of the PRIZE, as these companyās are. š š©Lastly, if there are too many red flags, feel empowered enough to walk away. The grass is only greener where you water and everything that glitters isnāt gold. š š½āļø Listen to your intituation and rest assured that more opportunities are within arms reach. šŖ š£ļø I'd love to hear your thoughts on this analogy and your own experiences with job hunting in the comments below! #JobHunting #CareerJourney #JobSearch #Interviewing #Motivation #Resilience #LinkedInNetworking #Inspiration

With my job hunt now underway - it would probably help to explain *why I'm job hunting. Spectrum has ended its local morning shows across the state and moved to a statewide format. As a result, my position is being eliminated. The video that accompanies this post is my on-air goodbye. A lot of people have asked if Iām angry about this decision. And the answer is ā no. This is a business decision in an industry facing severe challenges. Much like the internet did to newspapers, streaming is starting to chip away at TV news. I canāt blame a company thatās doing what it thinks will help it survive. While Iām not angry ā Iād be lying if I said I wasnāt heartbroken. If you know me, you know this was all I ever wanted to do. Iāve been a working journalist for 26 years, starting at age 17. Iāve been on TV for 23 years. Iāve anchored the mornings in Buffalo for one month shy of 12 years. This job has become an integral part of my identity and how I see the world. A decade ago, the path forward would be simple: find another anchor job in Buffalo or in another market. Only, itās not that simple anymore. My family is happily settled in Western New York. Carrie and I built a house here that we love. And our 7-year-old son Ethan is thriving in school. Lancaster offers an amazing special education system and thereās no way we would remove him from that. A new anchor job in this market would almost certainly include weekends. Which would mean time away from Carrie and Ethan. The three of us treasure our time together ā and Iām very aware that Ethan only grows up once. Iām not going to miss that time.Ā So as much as I love my profession, the truth is I love my family even more. Never say never ā maybe something can work out. But in all likelihood it looks like Iāll have to find something outside of the business. And while that saddens me greatly ā all I have to do is look at my son to know Iām making the right decision. If youāve ever worked with me at various stations over the years ā thank you. If youāve ever supported me through the years during this journey ā thank you. And if youāve ever taken time to watch me on your TV ā thank you most of all. As much fun as this career has been ā and as ācoolā as it is to be on TV ā in the end itās always been about serving the viewers. Carrie is always uncomfortable when viewers approach me in the supermarket to say hi. But I never have been. As I said in my TV goodbye ā it shows that I made some small degree of difference in their day. Thereās no greater career reward than that. Iāll be sure to share what the future holds as soon as I know. And please reach out if you know of any opportunities for a seasoned communications professional!
