I was offered a VP job with 10 days of PTO. TEN DAYS. That includes sick AND vacation time. This was a company that had actually recruited me too. When I tried to negotiate, I was told they are a public company so they couldn't (I've worked for 3 public companies; PTO is negotiable if you want it to be). When I asked if I could take 1-2 weeks of unpaid time, I was told no. The kicker? The CEO also told me that she wished they had better work/life balance. She IS where the culture starts. The hiring manager assured me she was flexible with time, but I learned long ago if it's not in writing, it's not real!!! The best part? The agency recruiter told me she needed an answer the same day the offer was made. I declined the job (this was a few years back) and stayed at my job back then until I found a better opportunity. They lost a candidate that would have worked incredibly hard. This past year with a sick husband, a dad who was terminally ill and passed away, kids with crazy new schedules (and broken bones) I was reminded of why I made a good decision to say no to that job a few years ago. I’m reminded of how important negotiations are. I’m reminded of how important advocating for yourself and knowing what you’re willing to accept is. I'm also reminded that, sadly for those who have been laid off for a while, they don't always have that power. Instead of undervaluing our employees and candidates, we need to realize they are the biggest asset a company has. I was fortunate to be working and to able to say no. But I’ve been laid off where I can’t afford to. Even in a rough job market, know your non-negotiables. And employers? Being decent just isn’t hard. Be a good human #pto #flexibility #beagoodhuman #jobs #culture
I was offered a job for VP and only 10 days of PTO. From a 20-days PTO. I tried to negotiate like you but was unsuccessful. I needed the job and took it. I now have a job with only 10 days PTO and cannot use until accrue but wasn’t told any of that regarding use/accrual until after I started. I took the position because I had been laid off and this was only offer I had. Try adding your own healthcare struggles and doctor appointments to try to juggle your PTO.
For me as an European it’s unbelievable. Even for people who are freelancers they usually get 20+ days of PTO. 26 days is the bare minimum for experienced workers. Vonage offers unlimited PTO globally and I can confirm that based on my own experience. We are looking for new employees and I’m sure that even a VP will find few open positions. Exhausted employees are unproductive so remember to take your time off.
I live in Germany and have never seen a job posting with less than 28 PTO, 30 days is standard. Sick days NOT included - like, wtf, who takes sick days out of vacation days?! And decent companies either pay you for overtime or you take flexitime!
When I took my VP job with 10 days of PTO, the CEO yelled at me for taking 5 of them 6 months later.... That might have been a clue.
No one is incentivized on being a good human being. Apparently if we want things done that are morally and ethically on the level, we have to make the sure the person doing it is compensated appropriately…
And this is why the U.S. work culture and ethics needs to change. Americans should ask are for better employment/ human rights!
If I am reading this right. Did you announce to the world and your current job that you are interviewing and got an offer? 😂
Unfortunately this is pretty common. I started my career with 5 days of PTO vacation.
