Building Peek - your AI-powered personal CFO (beta testers welcomed: peek.money) | ex-Google ex-Amazon
Three years ago today, I left Google's Next Billion Users (NBU) team to start my own company. My time on the NBU team made me the founder I am today at Peek. In fact, that experience led several of us to eventually start our own ventures! We learned how to take risks, in a large organization that shuns risk. The NBU team at Google wasn't your typical product group. We operated with a startup-like freedom, taking risks and exploring ideas that other Google teams couldn't. Our mission? Building products like Google Pay for the next wave of internet users in emerging markets. We were guided by the same principles that many of us still carry with us today: be obsessed with our users, and do right by them. We spent so much time together, traveling to diverse markets like Nigeria and Brazil to gain firsthand insights into different user needs and contexts. Google Pay, once considered a longshot (even internally), became the leading payments app in India. Surrounding yourself with the right team also matters. The people who joined the NBU team at Google did so out of a passion for building better products for the next billion users coming online. I learned so much from the passionate, energetic, risk-taking group of people like Melissa-Ann Chan, Rushit M. and Sandeep Menon. Their incredible energy and mentorship made our time together. They say that you are the sum of the people you surround yourself with. Who I am today owes much to this incredible group of individuals as I got my career started at Google ❤️ To those contemplating the leap from big tech to startups: Your current role isn't just a job, it's preparation for something bigger.
About 15 years ago I moved from MS shop completely to Google platform/cloud. I am attracted to Google's Don't be Evil mantra. Google products famously get kills. But now I understand they are just reborn somewhere else by ex googlers. Just look at AI, how many AI startups founded by ex googlers. It's amazing to see the pictures of experiences of you young generation to be in a corporate environment like that. I only hope with AI and new ventures even younger generation could be more don't do evil and do more goods to the rest of the world mantra
The challenges the NBU team tackled are among the most impactful I've come across - It was a pleasure to collaborate with it a few years ago
