NTSA ISSUES NEW DIRECTIVE TO PARENTS & MOTORISTS AHEAD OF SCHOOL RE-OPENING The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a directive to motorists, parents and guardians of school-going children in a bid to ensure road safety ahead of schools reopening in late August. NTSA in a statement on August 22, 2024, urged the parents and guardians to ensure that respective schools have complied to a directive issued by the Ministry of Transport. "Private motorists, Public Service Vehicle operators, school management and parents/guardians have an enormous responsibility of ensuring the safety of our children," said NTSA. The Authority necessitated that it is prudent that the vehicles ferrying children are insured, roadworthy, fitted with functional speed limiters that transmit data to the NTSA Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS) and compliant with licensing requirements including having valid road service licences, inspection certificate among others. Further, NTSA said that all road users must be cognizant that there will be increased travel of school children across the country with schools re-opening in the coming week. The Authority issued the directive highlighting that dangerous driver behaviors such as speeding, reckless overtaking, use of un-roadworthy vehicles, drunk driving, driver fatigue, carrying of excess passengers, use of unfamiliar routes has been attributed to some of the reported crashes. At the same time, NTSA said that during this back-to-school period, the ongoing NPS enforcement, NTSA safety compliance checks and the Usalama Barabarani education programme will be heightened across the country. "Previously, we witnessed violations that in some instances resulted in both fatal and serious injuries. We call upon all motorists to play their part as road safety is a shared responsibility." 🚌 In the early 20th century, school transportation was a far cry from what it is today. Safety measures were lacking, and the concept of protective measures inside vehicles was almost non-existent. 😬 💡 Fast forward to today, when many states have recognized the potential safety benefits of seat belts on school buses. However, financial considerations often play a significant role in the implementation of seat belts on school buses. 💰 As a result, we have a patchwork approach where some districts in a state might have buses with seat belts, while others might not. It's important to stay informed on the latest legislation because our kiddos are our future, and it's our responsibility to ensure their safety during their journey to knowledge. Let's work together to create a safer environment for all students! 💪 To learn more about the evolution of seat belt laws on U.S. school buses and the specifics for your state, read on at the blog from School Bus Fleet below. 👇 #StudentSafety #SchoolTransportation #SeatBeltsMatter #SafetyFirst https://lnkd.in/gMVhZYTC

WHY ROAD SAFETY SHOULD BE TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS 🤷♂️ Teaching road safety to students is crucial as it instills lifelong habits that can save lives. It encompasses a wide range of knowledge and skills, including understanding traffic signs, pedestrian safety, proper use of sidewalks and crosswalks, and the importance of wearing seatbelts and helmets. By educating students about road safety, we empower them to make informed decisions and act responsibly when navigating roads, whether as pedestrians, cyclists, or drivers in the future. One strong point is the prevention of accidents and injuries. Teaching students about road safety helps reduce the risk of accidents, injuries, and fatalities on the roads. It equips them with the knowledge and skills to identify and avoid potential hazards, such as speeding vehicles, distracted drivers, or unsafe road conditions. By understanding the rules of the road and practicing safe behaviors, students can protect themselves and others from harm. Another significant aspect is promoting active transportation. Encouraging students to walk or bike to school not only benefits their physical health but also reduces traffic congestion and pollution. By teaching road safety, we empower students to navigate their neighborhoods safely, making active transportation a viable and attractive option for daily travel. Moreover, teaching road safety fosters responsible citizenship. Understanding and respecting traffic laws and regulations are essential aspects of being a responsible member of society. By instilling these values in students from a young age, we contribute to building a culture of safety and respect on the roads, where everyone plays their part in ensuring the well-being of themselves and others. Overall, teaching road safety to students is about more than just preventing accidents, it's about empowering them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to become responsible and conscientious road users for life.
