In our ongoing efforts to reach remote communities like Pokot, Kenya, where poverty conditions are severe and widespread, we've encountered heartbreaking situations where children and mothers suffer greatly due to the lack of clean water. Many families with limited access to basic amenities live in makeshift shelters, such as mud huts. Economic opportunities are scarce, and residents often struggle to meet their daily needs. This is why the flooding in Kenya has been especially devastating for street children ⬇️ An estimated 3,000 children sleep on the streets, and over 46,000 families live and work on the streets. Around 40% of Kenyans live below the poverty line, with many children pushed to the streets by family abuse and economic hardship. High levels of family abuse and poverty in the country are pushing many children to the streets of major cities. Approximately 78% of the population is under 35. Many young people struggle to secure sustainable employment, putting them at high risk of becoming street-connected. Now the floods have destroyed their already temporary shelters, leaving them exposed to the elements and at high risk of waterborne diseases. The disaster has washed away their few possessions and essential documents, making their situation even more dire. Access to food and clean water has been limited, and the inability to work has worsened their poverty and malnutrition. #ProjectMonday | Next year, H2O4ALL will begin a new partnership with the Douelos Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to sustainable community development in vulnerable communities. We'll be breaking new ground the Choco region of Colombia, where thousands of people live without safe water and almost 70% of the population live below the poverty line. Since many rural communities lack the infrastructure for running water, safe water sources are few and far between. Waterborne diseases are a persistent problem for many small communities. To make matters worse, access to health services is scarce as well, leaving families vulnerable when people get sick. Through next year's initiative, several small communities in the region will receive safe water filters, allowing community members to keep safe from waterborne diseases.
