Supernal came in late, behind Joby and Archer. And despite the good strategy discussed in this article, I’m not sure the manufacturing prowess of a car maker like Hyundai translates to the high standards necessary for the aviation industry at the same scale as the automotive market. Last point-I’m glad Supernal recognizes the issue of infrastructure. Missing on the list mentioned here is tapping into and capacity of the electrical grid. Large draws from vertiports with more that a couple vehicles will need huge upgrades and new lines installed. Road casualties are not a priority for the Health and Safety Executive https://lnkd.in/e9ysFSmZ instead "the police will in most cases take the lead in the investigation of road traffic incidents on the public highway." https://lnkd.in/eZUJhn9b This means HSE has a very different role depending on whether an employee is killed on company premises or travelling on the highway. The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) is responsible for health and safety on our railways, but not our roads. In 2022/23 135 workers were killed in work related accidents https://lnkd.in/eGJ6N9Yr and 27 railway fatalities were reported under RIDDOR. https://lnkd.in/eiZvMdte In 2022, approximately one third (513) of the 1538 deaths on the roads in England and Wales were work related. Making the roads in England and Wales its most dangerous workplace. In its report on automated vehicles (AVs) the Law Commission identified gaps in corporate manslaughter, fraud and health and safety legislation for operators of AVs, these included "compromising safety standards, accountability gaps, need for active involvement by senior management, asymmetry with how drivers are dealt with, asymmetry in access to data and moral blame in the face of serious wrong doing." https://lnkd.in/ei73ZRJC The gap in health and safety also applies to our highways. Consider the safety issues encountered with deployment of SMART Motorways, the deaths on these roads were not treated as a health and safety incident. Would the same be true in a similar scenario on our railways (e.g. Hatfield). There is no national body that oversees or regulates the quality of road maintenance delivered by local highway authorities. 77% of the preventing future death reports issued by coroners for road (highways safety) have contributory factors related to road design or maintenance. While charges can be brought against drivers and vehicle owners, it is left to the coroner to request action is taken by the highways authority. Why aren’t vehicle manufacturers, companies, and the government doing more in this space to prevent work related incidents killing and injuring people? It seems at the moment when there is a fatal crash we blame the driver and yes driver behaviour is the largest single factor. So knowing a commercial driver might speed, be distracted, be tired, have a medical condition, be impaired etc. and knowing there is technology and engineering solutions why have they not been implemented? In any other work environment (or transport system) the risk would not be tolerated. Firstly, these collisions are not reportable under RIDDOR and so the H&SE don’t investigate. Secondly, media reporting rarely mentions the make and model of the vehicle, the company operating the vehicle and who they were working for. If we were have this data then we can report not only that vans kill the most per mile travelled but what industry is killing most per mile traveled but what companies are killing the most per miles traveled and what make and model. Would any industry, company, or vehicle manufacturer want to be seen at the top of that list?

I also find it staggering that we tolerate any mode of transport where speed and behaviour is largely left to an individual, yet results, consistently, in thousands of life-changing injuries and nearly 2,000 deaths every year.
