Hello Everyone, Aspiring Advocate My drive to comprehend human behavior and promote mental well-being has motivated me to pursue a Master's degree in Psychology. Along the way, I have attained valuable wisdom about the complexities of being human, which has equipped me with indispensable expertise and abilities pivotal for making an influential difference within this domain. With the knowledge I am acquiring through my psychology studies, I aspire to work in advocacy and utilize these insights to advance mental health awareness and support. My belief is that comprehending behavioral influences can facilitate more empathic and successful initiatives for promoting change. Furthermore, by delving into this field of study, I am gaining a greater understanding of both individual struggles as well as systemic problems relating to mental well-being. As I progress in my studies, I acquire invaluable proficiencies in the fields of research, data analysis, and therapeutic techniques. These competencies will assist me in contributing towards positive transformation within advocacy activities. My focus remains on [insert passionate areas such as mental health policy or community outreach]. In honor of National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, I want to share the remarkable work of LifeSpeak Inc. expert Yiching Chua:     https://lnkd.in/g9rPeabT     Yiching provides an invaluable first-hand lens of the unique difficulties faced by many immigrants and their families. In this piece - and others that she contributes to LifeSpeak’s library of microlearnings - she delves into the cultural, familial, and societal factors that can impact wellbeing in diverse communities.    By highlighting often overlooked issues and sociocultural influences, Yiching sheds light on how immigration, assimilation pressures, and differing conceptions of mental health can affect those in need of support. And how culturally relevant care is a key factor in providing that support.     At LifeSpeak we work to ensure our over 500 subject matter experts represent a wide range of perspectives, abilities, and backgrounds. From the Therapist's Desk "You are rude for being a therapist. You didn't solve my problem." These words were directed at me by a participant who misunderstood the nature of our group WhatsApp program. The program was designed with a specific objective and was never meant to replace individualized therapy. Initially, while I was explaining everything calmly and clearly, I was seen as a good therapist fulfilling my role. This made her feel entitled to say whatever she pleased, ignore my explanations, and expect free therapy and problem-solving. However, when her comments crossed a line, my reaction was suddenly labeled as rude, simply because of my profession. It's important to remember that programs are curated by professionals like us, who hold proper qualifications and are trained to guide participants through a journey. Group programs are more about participants utilizing the content to their best ability than about us providing one-on-one therapy. Also, we are psychologists, not God. We have the same feelings and emotions as anyone else. We can feel hurt, and we have the right to set boundaries and defend ourselves when necessary. We put a lot of hard work and dedication into our workshops and therapy sessions, and our time and expertise deserve respect. I personally didn't mind that the program didn't match her perception of how she wanted the program to help her and I would definately work in better targeting the next time and also work on improving the program for the next batch. However, I didn't feel that she had the right to talk this way if her perception and expectation was very different from the clearly set objectives of the program which was communicated to her earlier. Friendly Chats Mitigate Social Exclusion Effects Simple social interactions, like chatting with a friend, can mitigate the effects of social exclusion. The research found that both face-to-face conversations and anticipating future interactions help individuals recover quicker from social slights and feel more secure. 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺!

🧨New Pub! Kudoes to PhD alum/students Mengru, Wufan, Wenting, and Brett! How can digital media empower people in terms of coping with the mental health challenges of a Covid-19 lockdown? And what role does misinformation sharing play in this process? Our study about a lockdown in Shanghai China shows that digital media skills may have paradoxical effects on people’s mental health depending on the type of skills. Information skills directly reduced levels of depression but indirectly aggravated depression by promoting misinformation sharing; in contrast, social skills alleviated depression by mitigating misinformation sharing. The findings highlight the importance of improving people’s digital media skills to building resilience to future public health crises and “infodemics” and uncover which particular skills can reduce depression and misinformation sharing during those times. Looking for youth with Lived/Living Experience? ❓ Yesterday, I was looking through my emails which included a poster for a youth advisory opportunity. I did a double-take when I first saw the recruitment criteria. What was "living experience"? I had never heard of the term before. I thought about it... 🤔 The term, "living experiences" suggest that the experiences may still be ongoing. In comparison, "lived experiences" suggests the experiences have already passed. It's interesting because there's sometimes a big misconception and stigma against people with mental health conditions that they can't succeed academically or professionally, and they need to be treated first before that's even possible. Yes, they may have challenges because of the condition. But there's also so much these individuals are capable of, and they shouldn't be dismissed. Personally, I felt really happy and respected seeing the term "living experience", because I live with a mental health condition. It felt so validating to have my experiences recognized, and to be respected. Individuals don't have to be recovered to be capable. What do you think? 𝑰'𝒎 𝒂 𝒑𝒔𝒚𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒊𝒔𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒚 𝑰𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑺𝒚𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒇𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒔. Ever since I was a little girl, I have been passionate about the idea of the whole human thought process. But, being born in a middle-class family from a semi-urban background – life happened. I chose the arts stream and studied History majors, Sociology, Political Science and Psychology as an ancillary subject for two years in my bachelor's degree because my family wanted me to work in the government sector. Before I could agree to their demands, I sought to explore where I belonged and started working on multiple domains until my bachelor’s was completed. By the time it did, I could only think of the pain I noticed, the gaps in awareness of self and the toxic culture happening in the personal and professional lives of people around me. So, I chose to pursue two master’s at the same time (Anthropology and Clinical Psychology) to understand how it all started (the evolution of mind, body and behaviour) and continued to volunteer in an industry that could allow me to practice intercultural communication by hosting people from around the globe and freelancing. I also ventured into academic writing and mentoring because, of course, I was kind of homeless by the age of 18. Since I couldn’t help but think in patterns and interdisciplinary angles of it all, and hardwired myself to multitask - everything came easy to me. Even during my internships and training in mental hospital and remote setting. Right after I completed the required amount of training hours – I started practising privately through an organization. My therapist says I am a fast observer and a natural counsellor – I can easily put myself in the shoes of others and guide them in the way it would help. Well, my clients say this too. But what about my community? Am I even part of the psychologist's community? Is it fine to think in patterns and help the way people need it, or follow the methodology as everyone does?  Every time I open LinkedIn and see someone questioning the so-called “quacks” of Instagram, I can’t help but think – am I a quack too? I have been spending hours lately scrolling profiles, checking the backgrounds of every psychologist thinking would they even consider me as someone like them? In my previous psych meet-up event – I pointed out that if help is coming from the bottom of your heart, it can be offered through active collaboration and supervision. I helped several psychology students, and assisted in their practical assignments in foreign universities (shadow work) – but I never seemed to think about building a profile of my own.
