As I wrap up my first quarter at Crowe , I can't help but smile, thinking about the incredible experiences and lessons I've gained along the way. From navigating spreadsheets to discovering the quirkiest coffee spot near the office, it's been an exciting ride. Couldn't resist to share what I have learnt so far- Ask, and don't assume: Instead of making guesses, I've learned that it's okay to ask questions. Trust me, it saves the day. In the world of audits, asking the right questions is like having a secret superpower. It's better to seek clarity than to assume and potentially make mistakes. Every Day is a Good Day: A significant shift in my mindset has been realizing that every day is a good day. Sure, there are moments when we stumble or make mistakes, but that doesn't define the day as bad. A truly bad day is when you don't give it your all. Embracing this perspective has made each day a new opportunity to learn, grow, and excel. It's all About the Team: Beyond the spreadsheets, it's the amazing folks who bring life to the office. I have always believed that achieving perfection and expertise in a field was the only key to advancement, but the impact that good and supportive people can bring in, is just unmatchable. In a nutshell, the past few months have taught me that each day is like a new canvas, that has to be painted with the beautiful shades of new experiences. Some time ago, I saw this quote on the Karika Republic Instagram page, and it got me thinking about so many things. The quote says, “Think big, Think small.” The highlight of the message under that post is that working for a seemingly small organization has a way of making you climb the career ladder faster than someone who is with a big organization where there seem to be seemingly rigid rules. This is because the seemingly small organization has a way of letting you own your project, do your thing, and just let you be you rather than following some set rules. Does this mean that you shouldn’t aim high? Far from it! As I thought about this quote, I remember February 2022 when I resigned from my job at the audit firm where I used to work as an external auditor at the time for a proper accounting role. The essence of that decision was because I wanted to know what it feels like to be in an accounting space, and what it means to prepare the books rather than coming to check the books. I joined what I will refer to as a small organization as an Account Officer and kept at it. About eight months into the job, the Account Manager resigned, and based on the chain of command, I was next to her, which automatically meant that I had to fill in the space pending the time a new person came on board, which never happened until I left. However, during my time as the “acting manager,” it allowed me to own my thing. I interfaced with top managers and sat in meetings with people whom I will refer to as “big” and who ordinarily I wouldn’t have had access to, and that helped me profile myself for my next job. Long story short, at the end of the day, "focus your focus" and don’t let anyone make you feel less, based on the brand or organization you work for. Shortly after, calls from big firms including a Big 4, I decided to stick to my choice. Auditing big companies at 19, being called "sir", Independent audits, facing doubts, and excelling with the fantastic seniors. What have I learned? 🌱 There may be doubts or regrets at the beginning, but it's all part of the journey. Taking on big responsibilities early on has been challenging, but I love it. Overcoming hurdles independently is super satisfying, reminding me that the journey is as crucial as the destination. As I continue, I remind myself to learn from everything, whether it's the daily 5 hrs of travelling or complex tasks at work. Every experience is a lesson. During my Articleship, we had a team member named John who was known as the go-to person for updates on everyone’s mistakes. Whenever something went wrong, John was quick to report it to the manager, often exaggerating details to make himself look better. At first, it seemed harmless, but soon it started affecting the entire team. One day, Mark, another team member, made a minor error in a report. Before he had a chance to fix it, John had already told the manager. Mark was called into the office and reprimanded without the opportunity to explain or correct his mistake. This incident shook Mark’s confidence and made him wary of sharing ideas or taking risks in his work. The atmosphere in the office changed. Team members became more guarded and less willing to collaborate, fearing that any misstep could be reported. Innovation slowed down, and the once vibrant and creative team dynamic turned tense and unproductive. This experience taught us all an important lesson: fostering a culture of trust and collaboration is essential for a healthy and productive workplace. Shocked by the industry norm? So was I and that made me lay the foundation of Mulcahy Consulting Group Pty Ltd. Starting my own firm was a decision fueled by two pivotal realizations in my career.  ➢ Firstly, working in a traditional accounting practice opened my eyes. I saw invoices for hundreds, sometimes thousands, for tasks that took me no time at all. Clients were in the dark. It didn't sit right with me.  ➢ Then, observing finance departments in large corporations further shaped my perspective. Overworked teams. Overstaffed yet inefficient. Technology? Barely leveraged. And consultants? Their insights came with hefty price tags but no hands-on solutions unless you paid even more. It all boiled down to a system that seemed to prioritize profit over genuine client success. This is why I started my firm. To challenge the norm. To prove that client value and efficiency should go hand-in-hand. Have you felt this in your career? How did it inspire change in your path?

Comment from YouTube: "I tried the CIA route many years ago and passed 3 out of 4 parts. Kept trying to pass the fourth part and did not so I finally gave up. It was not until 2022 that I found the CAE self-course study on cRisk Academy, went through it, and felt so rewarded in the fact that I was already doing many of the things discussed during the self-study. Because of this course I took a different course as CAE related to how I interacted with others. It has paid off tremendously. Currently I have an intern whose major is in the Accounting arena, but she wants to go into Internal Audit. Why? She worked as an intern with an accounting firm and worked in the Tax area. She said she ate 3 meals a day at her desk and decided then she did not want to pursue a career as a public accountant after graduation. She likes problem-solving, she has great technical skills, and surprisingly she has wonderful soft skills as well. I know there have been many discussions about people leaving internal audit, but it is exciting to see a younger person wanting to enter that field. Maybe if more college student s took internships with accounting firms and actually lived that life maybe they would turn toward internal audit as well. Who knows." I think it's exciting when younger people want to enter #internalaudit and hope it will continue to be a great choice. Started working at Newedge finance exactly a year ago.In that one year I have laughed, been excited, learnt, questioned myself and grown. I am definitely so proud of who I have become.From working with customer experience :Quality assurance(auditing calls and social media interactions ), contact centre(making calls myself and answering customers first hand), to Projects , then to working with strategy and innovation (starting a branch from the scratch, organizing events and telling people first hand who we are as well as managing several projects). Working with diverse teams has helped me hone some of my skills and pick up new ones.Here are ten lessons I have learnt on this job that I would love to share:-Customers are king: They are the reason we do what we do and their needs and satisfaction is to be prioritized-Ask questions: Being inquisitive will do you a lot of good, it makes it easier for one to discharge their duties effectively-Never think of yourself as too small: You are enough and there is a reason you are currently where you are, so never think less of yourself-Continue to learn and develop yourself :The world is ever changing, read that book, take that course, and learn from your colleagues-Hold yourself accountable but never beat yourself up: You should take responsibility for your actions but while at that never dwell on your mistakes-The numbers matter: Use numbers to track your progress at work and to know where you are defaulting so you fix up-Always know when it is time to rest and recharge: You need to find balance and take regular breaks to avoid burnout-Be kind: Always ensure you leave people better than you met them and be empathetic.-Do your duties diligently: Always strive to do your duties diligently and respect everyone while at it-Collaborate: Team work makes the dream work, never isolate yourself from othersI am extremely grateful for my bosses Khafil Animashaun Daphne Akatugba who have given me an avenue to discover more about myself while working on several projects. My incredible managers at work whose leading and directions have made work easy, my incredible colleagues Felicia Alamu Adedolapo Aderoju and so many others for being the best colleagues one could ask for.Indeed this has been a journey, one of several highs and lows.Let’s see what the second year holds!🚀
