University of Zurich Ditches THE Rankings 🤯 Yes, you read that right! Why? Because they're tired of the rankings game focusing more on quantity over quality. And here's the kicker: they believe these rankings create false incentives. Instead of chasing after higher publication numbers, they want to prioritize the actual quality of their content and teaching. This is big news, but why aren't they just trying to climb up the rankings? Well, they've had enough. They argue that the current ranking system fails to capture the diverse achievements of universities in research and teaching comprehensively. Imagine putting all this effort into your diverse educational and research programs, only to be reduced to a mere number on a list. Doesn't sound fair, does it? And of course, the University of Zurich doesn't have the luxury of just sitting back. The landscape of higher education is evolving rapidly, and if they don't take a stand, who will? Now, the real question, Why is this a wake-up call for NIRF in India? Here’s why I think it's crucial: The current ranking metrics might not be doing justice to the multifaceted nature of educational excellence. We need a system that values more than just numbers - one that appreciates qualitative measures of success. And let's not forget about stakeholder engagement. If we want a ranking system that truly reflects what's valuable in higher education, then everyone's voice needs to be heard. This move by the University of Zurich could inspire a shift towards more holistic and meaningful assessments of educational institutions, not just in India but globally. Once more it is that time of the year when everyone takes interest in the financial happenings of the country, as the budget fever reins. For me as an educationist the government’s commitment to growing education in India is commendable. I have tried to highlight some of the key features of this year’s budget for education.   1-  Advancing and augmenting research and innovation efforts is quite an encouragement. So what does it bring? 📊 Rise from 165.14 crore rupees in 2022-23 to 355 crore rupees in 2024-25 📊 Support for initiatives like the National Initiative for Design Innovation, Startup India Initiative in Higher Educational Institutions, and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 📊 Channelizing research towards societal impact and elevate India's research ecosystem to international standards through implementation of IMPRINT Research Initiative, SPARC, STARS, and MERITE   2-  Research is the backbone of a higher education institution and a Corpus INR 1 lakh crore has been sanctioned for financing Research and Innovation in Sunrise domains. How does it benefit us? 💼 50-year interest-free period 💼 Long-term financing and refinancing opportunities for emerging sectors 💼 Facilitates private sector participation, including educational institutions, in pioneering research endeavors 💼 Fostering innovative research within sunrise domains or sectors.   3- Establishment of New Institutions and Skilling of Youth. How will the youth benefit? 👨🎓 Establishment of 3000 new ITIs 👩🎓 Noteworthy additions to prestigious educational institutions like IITs, IIITs, IIMs, AIIMS, and medical colleges   4- Budget allocation of 100 crores for National Digital University- an aim to integrate regional population 💻 From 4 crores to 100 crores has been allocated for National Digital University (NDU) 💻 NDU will provide content in different Indian languages and ICT formats   5- Centres of Excellence (CoE) in Artificial Intelligence (AI)- Keeping India updated 🖱 Allocation of 255 crores for establishing Centres of Excellence 🖱 Training and empowering students in emerging digital technologies SYMBIOSIS INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY #budget2024 #researchandinnovation #AI #india  

#IIT Wake UP - You may be losing out! Many (non-IITians) trying to get to supportive ears in incubation cells in various IITs have known first-hand how closed the system is. Funding is reserved for their own tribe, thank you very much. After all, haven't they proven they are the best, most brilliant minds? The once-venerated-giant has become fat and arrogant, too blinded by its own brilliance to see the Sun beyond their doors. This morning I spoke to a student in an unknown University in a Tier-2 city not many associate with higher education. We were talking about a machine they are building to handle one of the biggest pollution issues in the country in a brilliant, carbon-negative manner. Yet another team is building another nature-based solution to what is a massive issue internationally and could bring very healthy export revenue to India. Both these teams are well funded, because expensive machines need to be built. Both will share copyrights and commercial success with the University - while the risks are taken entirely by the educational institute. I felt overjoyed. Who needs formal R&D budget allocations or angel investors? These small universities are seeing that India is brimming with brilliant ideas. Just because a child lives in a small city and is the son of a farmer does not mean he cannot grasp complex science. These kids are talking BIG ideas. They are getting the space and the support to play, experiment, tweak and are coming up with much-needed practical applications in the Sustainable space - which I believe will be the highest-growth space in the next 3 decades. Meanwhile the more established names can watch these smaller institutions become the next big things.

When intelligence and data are put to good use, society benefits. That’s why I’m excited about BNP Paribas Fortis’ research collaboration with Ghent University’s (Universiteit Gent) Department of Economics. Our joint non-profit, Prometis lab, will analyse real-world economic and societal trends using aggregated and anonymised data from our bank. This process will prioritise intellectual property rights and data protection. Under the leadership of Dr Milan van den Heuvel, alongside the research group led by Professor Koen Schoors from the Department of Economics at UGent, Prometis Lab will investigate how aggregated and anonymised bank data can offer valuable economic insights for socio-economic policy. We're combining the expertise of two top teams. Postdoctoral and predoctoral researchers from UGent will collaborate with data engineers and data scientists from our Centre of Expertise in Artificial Intelligence (CoE A&AI). The groundbreaking collaboration will enable PhD students to analyse real economic activity in Belgium. Prometis Lab will also be open to researchers and institutes, both within and outside UGent. UGent and BNP Paribas Fortis can then leverage these findings to improve efficiencies and benefit customers and society.  The aim of the research group is to expand the platform into an international knowledge centre. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in data-driven research, and we're excited to see the positive impact it will have. This metric measures the weighted number of our alumni who have achieved top academic distinctions relative to our institution's size, reflecting our enduring commitment to 𝐸𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑇𝑎𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑒 1460.
