The revelation that less than 2% of philanthropic giving is directed towards women and girls underscores a glaring inequity in charitable priorities (it also, notably, mirrors the 2% gap in #VC funding to #womenfounders). This statistic highlights the urgent need for targeted funding to address the unique challenges and inequities faced by women and girls globally. Enter Melinda French Gates, a formidable advocate for gender equity, whose influence and commitment to women's empowerment could catalyze a significant shift in philanthropic trends. Gates has the potential to redirect focus and funding towards initiatives that uplift and support women and girls, fostering a more inclusive and equitable world. #philanthropy #giving #impact #women #equality #womensrights #empowerment

Given that "less than 2% of philanthropic giving" currently goes to women and girls, Thalia Beaty of The Associated Press rightly asks whether Melinda French Gates can move the needle on transformational philanthropic funding in support of gender equity. Ms. French Gates’ stunning recent commitment of $1 billion to support "women's equality" marks a potentially transformative shift in philanthropic giving, challenging the longstanding trend where under 2% of U.S. charitable donations go directly to organizations benefiting women and girls. Her pledge could inspire others to join her, possibly breaking the 2% ceiling and fostering a broader philanthropic movement toward gender equity. Yet, while a single large donation will make a significant difference, particularly for those organizations receiving support, effecting and sustaining longterm change requires far broader support and engagement. How might increased funding for women and girls be sustained, beyond individual commitments such as Ms. French Gates’? How, for instance, might individual and institutional funders come together and pool resources, in order to create lasting change? And how can we make sure that philanthropic efforts are more inclusive and address the unique needs of women and girls from diverse backgrounds, including those representing racial, ethnic, and Indigenous minorities, LGBTQ+ communities, the elderly, and those living with disabilities? “For the first time in history, women are on the verge of controlling the majority of personal wealth.” Fortune's article covers the impending transfer of wealth to women which is projected to reach $30 trillion in the next decade. Perhaps more significant than the amount transferred, is how the wealth will be directed. I'm particularly interested in the notion of “giving circles”, a philanthropy model where a group of people, varying from a dozen to a few hundred, pool their donations and make a collective decision on the causes it supports. Research supports the effectiveness of such groups, with 53% of giving circle members reporting that being part of a collective giving improved their ability to have constructive conversations with differing viewpoints, demonstrating how these groups promote honest dialogue. I like the presence of collaboration in giving circles and think it links well to moonshot philanthropy beliefs around the importance of collaborating to achieve big ideas. By coming together, we find intriguing perspectives and are challenged to see the world outside of our personal experience. #GivingCircles #Philanthropy #MoonshotPhilanthropy https://lnkd.in/gRPnY-US

RESOURCE: Great intro guide from Rockefeller Philanthropy to the world of women and philanthropy. Written for both established and emerging donors, it aims to help women delve further into the potential growth and fulfillment that can come from giving. Why does women’s philanthropy matter? Here are three reasons: 1. Women control more of the financial pie than ever before. 2. The percentage of women wielding wealth is only going to rise. 3. Research supports the idea that gender differences in giving between women and men are real. Think of this guide as an experienced friend—a partner who can guide you in investigating, learning and maybe even getting inspired by how women give. Think of it as a companion as you explore how philanthropy can add to your life and the life of your loved ones.Because philanthropy can help organizations take calculated risks, not all philanthropy achieves its goals. However, when successful, philanthropic and personal investments can pay dividends in the form of meaningful connection and even joy. #philanthropy #womeninphilanthropy #growth #giving #donors #rockefellerphilanthropy #fulfillment #women #womenempowerment https://buff.ly/46dbNjq

Learn more about the 46th Annual Celebration Gender Equity Champion, Jennifer Rice, by revisiting our Supporter Spotlight Blog Post from 2022: "There’s so much research and data that shows how helping women is such a tipping point. You’re not just helping that one woman. The support you show a woman impacts families, children, etc. This impact is exponential. Helping women is such a fulcrum. If you want to leverage your philanthropy, help women because they will make sure that the donation you make and what you give is given back tenfold." https://lnkd.in/e46Ypmjk

Sara Lomelin of Philanthropy Together writes: "But it’s not just billionaire women changing the landscape of philanthropy—women of all wealth levels have been leading how philanthropy can be done differently for decades through an approach called 'giving circles.' The wealth transfer wave is coming, and with it a different way of giving. Giving boldly like Melinda, giving with trust like MacKenzie, and giving with joy and with one another like my giving circle sisters. All women have a role to play to step into their power and their vision, and together, we can all be so much more powerful. I hope you join a giving circle in your neighborhood or start your own." #impactaustin #givingcircle #givingcircles #collectivegiving #centraltexas https://bit.ly/3YRRJDB

There have been a lot of articles and conversations debating the merits of Trust-Based Philanthropy recently, mostly requiring proponents of a trust-based approach to funding to repeatedly remind it's detractors of what trust-based philanthropy really is (Yes, there is still accountability! Yes, there is still a focus on evidence!). It's refreshing to read this article focusing on how we can go beyond trust-based philanthropy! Trust-based philanthropy is a great start, but how can we do even better? ''The Ms. Foundation report argues that while implementing trust-based philanthropic practices is “an excellent starting point” to reshape the unequal power dynamics between funders and nonprofits, it is simply not enough. That's where care-based philanthropy comes into play. “Care requires us to consider the unique needs and experiences of historically excluded communities, particularly women and nonbinary people of color, who bear the brunt of systemic racial and gendered oppression. It means investing in their healing, wellbeing, safety and survival,” the report states. [...] The report adds that through care, funders can “forge a more just and equitable future, where philanthropy's resources are channeled more effectively to support and sustain the communities that need it most” by continuing to embrace trust-based practices while “embarking on a radical transformation rooted in care.”'' #trustbasedphilanthropy #funding #philanthropy #care #carebasedphilanthropy #genderequality #womenandgirls #womensleadership #LGBTQIAleadership #BIPOCleadership #nonbinaryleadership
