Celebrate with health & compassion personal reflections from this year's Durga Puja celebrations: * ate vegetarian, (maximum raw veg & fruits, minimum processed food eg puris, dhoka, sugar), * did not buy new clothes/jewellery, * spent time with friends and family, * cooked a vegan meal for a relative trying to give up non-veg for better health * spent time with our in-house Durga idol (did not pandal hop), * used the car and air conditioning like a privilege not a default choice. So glad to have been practising a lot of what SHARAN (Sanctuary for Reconstruction of Health to Animals & Nature) teaches. Our hearts are in alignment, though I have not been their client. From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah..founder of SHARAN whose Rx is Nature. My work largely involves helping people make lifestyle changes for the better, in order to get well. I know how challenging it is to make a change. The most difficult thing is to start. Once you begin, it’s easy. It’s the change that is difficult, not the new habit. This is because we are creatures of habit. Most of our celebrations are done through rituals that have been passed on from generation to generation. Like our food habits, with each generation our festivities become more extravagant and more destructive to the environment. There’s almost no festival where the celebrations don’t harm the environment or other living beings. Whether it’s the kite flying festival that injures so many birds and other creatures or the festival of sacrifices with so many animals being killed to appease a God that never demanded bloodshed or the festival where cobras are force-fed cow’s milk. Millions of idols made from plaster of Paris pollute water bodies nationwide, killing billions of animals and causing irreparable damage. This was never the intent, but it is now a ritual. Festival after festival there are the colours, the fireworks, the loudspeakers, disposable decorations, the new clothes and the heavy food that harms one’s health. It is possible to celebrate with health and compassion instead. The start may be difficult but it’s well worth it.

Have you ever tried Khichri: Lentils and Rice ? What is your favourite way of perparing this old world dish? Khichri, Khichdi, and Khichuri are derived from a Sanskrit word simply meaning rice and lentil. It has many variations and is popularly referred to as comfort food. The texture is generally wet rather than dry, like a risotto. It is often seasoned with clarified butter or pure ghee. From the Greeks to the Persians, it was a favourite of the Mughal Emperor Akbar! Traditionally, this Parsi Khichri is not wet but like a Palau. Served with kohra no patiyo, dahi ni kudhee, or tomato saas. Egyptians and their neighbours add vegetables to it, while the Indian subcontinent likes to serve it with yoghurt or other forms of curries. The people of Maharashtra and Gujarat living on the Arabian Sea, however, tend to add shrimp to their Khichri and whole, ripe baby mangoes for vegetarians. Healthy and simple, it is generally the first form of solid food introduced to babies. Being affordable as a self-contained, complete meal, it is the food of the masses. Many cultures dedicate a meal of Khichri during their week of wedding festivities, yet it is never served at the wedding! https://lnkd.in/e8QePFmH
