In 2023, the market expected a post-pandemic rebound after China ended its zero-Covid restrictions and opened up. Hopes were indeed high during the start of the year. But the economy has struggled to get back on its feet. The era of easy double-digit growth is over, but there are still pockets of growth where Swedish firms can succeed. Rising Tensions in US-China Relations Top Business Concern in China American Chamber of Commerce in China (AmCham China) 2024 Business Climate Survey finds the country remains a vital market for many American businesses and the presence of American companies in China strengthens the US-China relationship and the economies of both countries, with the benefits going beyond trade figures. At the same time, AmCham said companies were still worried about geopolitical tensions and new data laws, 43% of AmCham members indicated they don’t plan to expand their investments this year, and another 5% planned to cut the spending. November brought a landmark moment at the APEC summit: the long-anticipated meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden. So, a few weeks later, have there been any concrete results? It’s complicated. The positive reception in China suggests a renewed focus on global economic ties, particularly with the West. This has many in the international business community here breathing a sigh of relief. However, continued structural challenges for foreign businesses remain in China, especially in the tech and EV sectors. Moreover, supply chain diversification out of China is likely to continue even if tensions ease over the coming months. The building tensions of the last few years have begun an irreversible process and companies want to spread their risk. But all that said and done, we’re happy to see if not a halt, at least a respite, in tensions.
