As we get ready to welcome our 2024-2025 cohort of CAC AmeriCorps members next week, I'm thinking a lot about what it means to serve in the US today vs the early 2000's when I found a path that connected me to something bigger than myself, and gave me the tools to positively contribute. 🛠 Having grown up in a US Army family, my first introduction to national service was through the Military. My dad found the Army in his early 20's and it provided him a career pathway and a way to make a difference in the world around him that made sense for him. Having been a part of his journey, I found myself wondering what to do after college and serving in AmeriCorps NCCC made sense to me. It had echoes of Military service and the Civilian Conservation Corps, in structure, but was oriented around community-based work in the US which suited me. 🤝 With service struggling as a unifying principle in recent years, convenings of organizations like Peace Corps, the Selective Service System, and AmeriCorps, around their collective interest in engaging the next generation of servant leaders, has been encouraging. 💡💡 But lets dream even bigger and build on these efforts to connect to servant leaders working in government and non-profit spaces, faith-based communities, and individuals working in businesses to deliver on both the bottom line and the communities they serve. All a part of the same collective spirit to leave things better than when we found them.. for our children, for our country, and for ourselves. Amazing things bloom out of true friendships and good intentions. RHA is such a role model and a gap closer in food sustainability. A CEO of a billion dollar company I know of once said that in order to earn a billion dollars you have to solve a billion dollar problem (so cliched right ) but do we ever talk about winning the hearts of a billion people ? Solving a crucial problem that will alleviate hunger for a billion people ? Robin Hood Army is such a torchbearer in a landscape where such selflessness is as rare as sighting a snow leopard. P.S. : True leadership is winning hearts of the people and it can only happen when you move with the masses, understand their pain and pulse and bring your most authentic self onto the table.

Local Hero, National Bravery: The Story of Hiram W. Purcell and the Medal of Honor Growing up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Civil War history wasn't just in textbooks; it was woven into the fabric of our community. Monuments dotted the landscape, silent testaments to the sacrifices made generations before. One name that resonated with me was Hiram W. Purcell, a local boy who earned the highest military honor – the Medal of Honor. Hiram, born in 1837 in Upper Black Eddy, wasn't just a name on a plaque. He was a young man, not much older than I was when I first learned about him, who volunteered with the 104th Pennsylvania Infantry during the Civil War. In 1862, at the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia, Hiram found himself in the midst of a fierce battle. As his regiment retreated, entrusted with carrying the colors, he displayed courage that transcended the chaos. Facing the advancing enemy, a decision had to be made in a split second. Hiram, instead of continuing the retreat, turned back into the fray. His singular focus – to save the other regimental flag from capture. This act of selfless bravery, under heavy fire, stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication to duty and his comrades. Hiram's heroism wasn't recognized immediately. It wasn't until 1894, over 30 years later, that he received the Medal of Honor. Though delayed, the recognition solidified his place among the nation's bravest. Hiram W. Purcell's story is a reminder that heroism can emerge from the most ordinary people.
