An artistic person's primary priority is to create impact. (Right-brained person) A logical person's primary priority is to create wealth. (Left-brained person) It doesn't mean that the reverse is not true. We are just talking about the primary priorities here. For an artistic person, it could be impact first, wealth second. For a logical person's, it could be wealth first, impact second. This is an observation I have made interacting with the people I know and looking at the history. You look at Van Gogh, his primary priority was Impact first. He did paint all of his paintings even when he didn't get anything from it when he was alive. You look at Bill Gates, he created wealth first. And he has been doing all of those non-profit initiatives after his success. We can pull in a lot of examples for this category. Okay, now what about the majority of people. Most of them have been at this mission and have done it on scales that reached people around them, but not at a scale that the world is aware of. Fundraising is hard! This week I'm sharing top tips for writing grant applications on the Artichoke blog. It would be great to hear from the grant-makers, trusts and foundations in my network. What would be your advice to prospective applicants? What are the main do’s and don’ts? · Do your research – read the guidelines carefully and only apply if your project meets the criteria · Prioritise – you won’t be able to apply for every opportunity · Leave enough time – check how often trustees meet · Be prepared – look at all the questions before you start writing · Tailor your application – reflect the funder’s interests and priorities · Have a clear structure – tell a story from beginning to end · Learn to love budgets - another way to tell your story in numbers · Be realistic about your costs and potential to raise match funding · Rejection is ok, keep trying – today's fundraising landscape is extremely competitive. Our Who I Am Foundation volunteers in ALBUQUERQUE and SANTA FE are seeking a photographer/videographer willing to donate their time to capture our efforts in the community! Visual aids drive our volunteer recruitment, donations, and adding new community partners! We understand photography is a craft and much time is put into it. We are not expecting or asking photographers to come out to every project or event we have, simply when able and available. Benefits of doing photography for a non-profit organization: -Positive Exposure. No, donating photography isn’t about exposure. It’s about helping a cause that you believe in. But with that, you can also gain exposure. -Access. Offering to do work for non-profits can get you access to people and places that you wouldn’t normally have access to if you were just some person who showed up with a camera. -Project ideas. Creative slumps happen to everyone. Asking a non-profit if there’s anything that you can help with will not only give you a specific purpose and a project to do, but it could also spark ideas for other projects that may end up defining you as a photographer. -It just feels good.
