From our special exhibition “Mirror of the World - Spotlights on Seascapes from three Centuries”: Attributed to Wouter Knijff (c. 1606-1694), Boats at a Jetty, c. 1640, oil on wood - Internationales Maritimes Museum Hamburg, inv. no. K-849 The liberality in the Netherlands has a great impact on the subjects depicted in the visual arts. In the rest of Europe, there is a stricter canon of images, i.e. an idea of what is considered worthy of depiction. In Holland, however, people freed themselves from these guidelines early on, and so sometimes vulgar pictorial themes such as drunkenness and prostitution were put on canvas. The rendering of these subjects can also be subtle, as in this painting: the contemplative-looking river scene is flanked on the left by two men who are outside a tavern. One of them is taking a large sip of beer. He stands in stark contrast to the noble patrons who are heading for the shore. Landscape paintings like this are popular in the 17th century because they are infused with a sense of humour and appeal to those prospective buyers who may not have experienced a high level of education, but are still able to decode the narrative. The attribution of this painting to the painter and art dealer Wouter Knijff is based on stylistic similarities. Only close observation reveals the signature „VG“, which refers to the famous landscape painter Jan van Goyen (1596-1656). However, since the latter painted more tonally, with distinctly reduced colour accents, and the architecture in less detail, it can be ruled out that it comes from the hand of the great master. Already during Van Goyen‘s lifetime, imitations appeared, as they fetched high prices on the market. There is a second version, similar except for a few differences, which is attributed to Gillis Peeters the Elder (1612-1653). That painting bears the false signature „VGoyen 1644“. DAIM Retrospective - 35 Years Graffiti. Exhibition: May 2024 - January 2025, Wood Art Institute, Hamburg In the beginning was the word. In the summer of 1989, 17-year-old Mirko Reisser and two friends spray-painted the five letters RIGHT on a distribution box. The term alone is a provocation. After all, the damage to property - at least from a legal perspective - is anything but "right". Today, 35 years later, Mirko Reisser still writes his artist name DAIM in the style of a classic graffiti writer. At the same time, however, Reisser redefines writing to a certain extent by transforming his pseudonym into complex sculptures. Sometimes this is to be understood literally. Reisser has also made forays into sculpture, carving the word DAIM out of wood or casting it out of concrete - and in this way transforming the two-dimensional medium of writing into three-dimensionality. As a rule, however, Reisser creates an optical illusion of physicality when he paints his name on canvases, in exhibition spaces or on building facades. He plays with light and shadow with such virtuosity that the impression is created that the beams, curves and polyhedrons, which are interlocked to form complex figures, leave the surface and actually extend into the room. Light is a very delicate material that sometimes seems very fragile because it needs to be. Throughout my career, I have photographed some temples in which I have always felt that the light was part of creating a prayer space where the faithful can communicate with God. In that sense, as a photographer I know that I should not alter the density of this light as an energy – even if it is very scarce for my camera – because that would not be correct or respectful. I don't have to add any light of my own, I can only contemplate the one available there to know how I will adapt to it: how much I will find, what it will be like, how it will be distributed and with what color temperature. When I work with the camera I always try to go unnoticed: when I photograph a temple I also want to be invisible.
