BREAKING: A 19-year-old stripper and the club where she worked, Cafe Risque, have sued Florida's attorney general and two local prosecutors to halt enforcement of a new state law banning adult entertainment businesses from employing people under 21. Serenity Michelle Bushey claims the law, aimed at deterring human trafficking, caused her to lose her job. The lawsuit argues that the law violates their constitutional rights.

The attorney, not the kicker.

Not so fast. States used to have varied drinking ages. The age of legal consumption is and was a state matter. Back then, Congress apparently knew it couldn’t dictate such a change, so it tied a mandatory minimum drinking age to federal highway funds. Uniformity soon followed. The nuanced question here appears to be whether Congress could legislate an age-based mandate with its commerce power; an FLSA type age requirement for adult entertainment labor. Almost certainly it could, but whether it dare try is another matter. That’s the rub. Whether Congress has this power, or whether it should exercise it, begs the question of this lawsuit: it’s a public policy debate, not a constitutional right.

Work at McDonald’s for a little while! You usually have to be 21 to drink 🍺 alcohol or enter those type of establishments! Here’s an idea 💡 how about college?

There’s NO constitutionally protected right to be a stripper. What planet do these “people” come from?

I'm sorry...what? How is it legal or rational to allow someone under 21 to work in adult entertainment in the first place?

How about getting an honest actual job?

Oh poo. Too bad, stripping and prostitution are the easiest jobs ever, and non-taxed. Who’s paying attention to all the money they take in? If they want to dance naked under age in front of men, then pay your taxes and fair share is all I say. They do make a whole lot more money than most. Perhaps if they worked a normal job they’ll understand hard work and give back to this country. So I have no empathy. For those of you who claim that these young women are duped into coming here, heck no they’re not. They know exactly what they’re coming to do at an early age. They’ve got access to everything ‘internet’. This is not the stone ages.

Ironically, she's right. 18 is adulthood and it needs to apply universally. But also, most girls who work in the clubs are immigrants typically Russian, or Central/East European, who are duped into coming here thinking they will be working in hospitality or restaurants. Upon arrival, the traffickers seize their passports and put them to work in strip clubs, or directly sex traffic them on the streets. It can be very difficult to prosecute, as the girls never are willing to testify for fear of never being able to return home or retaliation against other girls.

Since they serve alcohol and the legal drinking age is 21 - you should have to be 21 regardless of worker or customer. It may seem like a big deal to her now but she'll be glad she was forced to look for other work when she matures. Unless of course her goal is to become the next Stormy Daniels....

Over & over again, I’m reminded why I’m proud that I relocated to Florida. Give these kids a chance at ANYTHING more healthy, less exploitative and less likely to get them hurt, hooked on drugs or stuck in that life, forever. Give them other options!
