Today the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in U.S. v Rahimi. This case will decide if abusive partners under restraining orders should be allowed to possess guns. If decided for Rahimi, it would dismantle a federal law – in effect for almost 30 years – that’s designed to make our communities safer. It would also impact state protections that are currently in place. Keeping guns out of the hands of abusers keeps domestic violence victims alive. It can prevent mass shootings. And it meets the strict scrutiny standard. For the safety of all of us, Her Justice urges SCOTUS to overturn the U.S. Court of Appeals decision and to affirm our current laws that prevent known abusers from legal access to guns. THE LIST IS OUT AND TRUMP IS ON IT The witness lists for the prosecution and the defense have been made public and the primary witness for the defense is Trump. The question that inquiring minds want answered is this: "Will Trump sink his own ship if he testifies?" The second most important question inquiring minds want answered is "Will Trump take the witness stand?" Courts need to be a safe place for everyone. Criminal defense lawyers in particular have an important role: to ensure the state properly carries out its function in the administration of justice. Sometimes the public isn’t happy with lawyers because of the position they take in fulfilling their duty. It’s the government’s job to educate the public about this so people can understand a lawyer’s role. Time for the government to speak up.
