In the Wiley Online Library, NYU Stern Professor Sinziana Dorobantu explores “how geopolitical volatility—the instability of bilateral political affinity between countries—affects foreign subsidiary investments. Building on prior work that shows that the level of political affinity between countries facilitates foreign investments, we argue that the volatility of political affinity impedes firms’ ability to form expectations about stakeholder behavior and reduces subsequent investments in subsidiaries.” To learn more, visit this link: bit.ly/4fU2sn0

I've just published a new op-ed in Project Syndicate examining how Latin American and Caribbean countries can overcome chronic political short-termism. In "Overcoming Political Short-Termism in Latin America," I argue that the region's failure to implement lasting, credible reforms discourages investment and contributes to anemic GDP and productivity growth. To address this, I propose a bold solution: national autonomous institutions tasked with designing and implementing long-term, evidence-based policies in key development areas. These expert-led bodies, insulated from political pressures, could drive consistent policy on crucial issues like infrastructure, pensions, and education. Drawing inspiration from the success of independent central banks in the region and fiscal rules, such institutions could restore public trust and create conditions for a more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable future. The South in American Political Development - PDF: https://lnkd.in/g5nseEUV Recent years have seen a renewed interest in southern distinctiveness within the United States and its ramifications for the nation. This review provides an analysis of recent works and the interpretive issues they raise. I argue that collectively they have broken with the long-established image of the South in political science, the study of which was long organized around the region’s anticipated convergence to the patterns of the post–New Deal North. Recent texts have instead emphasized an enduring commitment to white supremacy and a determining influence for the region in shaping national politics and institutions. I identify two broad pathways of southern influence and discuss the debates over its sources. I then discuss recent works on southern regimes and the debates these have provoked. I conclude by suggesting that overcoming the limits of recent works will ultimately undermine some of our more sweeping interpretive claims and foundational premises.

It is really an interesting proposal. The main structural gap in some Latin American countries is of institutional capabilities to introduce effective and sustainable reforms. Therefore, it is not a lack of technical recommendations but the underdevelopment of institutional capabilities to design and implement #publicadministration and #publicpolicy reforms. In addition, each country should go through is own institutional evaluation to know their own strengths and weaknesses regarding introducing "adhocracies" like those independent and evidence-based agencies. Although central banks are good succesful examples, some might have lost traction and therefore need adjustment or even complete redefinition. Is it enough to introduce #pocketsofeffectiveness in the public sector? Some countries like Peru, with a strong central bank, remains a paradox because even it's fiscal strength is now losing traction as a 90s 'succesful' reform case. The region needs to develop its very own #publicadministration scholarship built on its own experience of administrative success and failures. Urgent research needs to be done on the "machinery of government" with the support of international organizations. The less we focus on administrative reforms, the more technical recommendations will just pile up without any actual reform to be implemented. By the way, an #adhocracy is not a solution by itself, it must be part of a multi-layered/multi-level actual solution.
