Deutsche Welle journalist Kate Katharina Ferguson's interview with ex-FTC Chair William Kovacic, which focussed on the US and EU authorities cracking down on big tech companies like Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta is fascinating. However, to my mind, the most interesting segment comes in just before the 17 minute mark when Mr Kovacic notes: “If you're going to be active in this policy domain, you need computer scientists, you need engineers, you need people specialised in analytics. You need people who've worked in that commercial community who can come into your agency and tell you what's going on. [For] the agency of the future to be effective [it] must have a significant body of technical experts who understand the technology, understand the business models and see the direction of travel.” Hear, hear, yes, yes, yes and YES! Just after this he makes another excellent point when he makes clear: “... individual jurisdictions operating in isolation cannot, I think, capably address these challenges. This requires a broader and deeper collaboration across jurisdictions [so] that, instead of having learning take place inside of single jurisdiction, you have the benefit of learning that takes place cumulatively…” Wouldn’t it be wonderful if these superb suggestions were taken up sooner rather than later across the board and across the world! https://lnkd.in/gTPGubiT

Great to share about our new paper in Internet Policy Review with Croakey Health Media on 'tuned advertising' - the dynamic process where ads continuously algorithmically optimise to people in real time and what this means for tuned advertising for harmful products like alcohol and gambling. Tuned advertising captures the real-time experimentation that digital platforms conduct on us, using the extensive data they collect and generate about us to target us with advertising we will be most susceptible to. This is deeply invasive and creates new harms when it comes to online marketing. Consider harms tuned advertising can have when a person is identified, in a moment they are feeling the most vulnerable, as the perfect target for ads for harmful products like alcohol and gambling. The Australian Government is currently looking to implement privacy reforms through amending the Privacy Act, which determines what data companies can collect and use about us - this underpins the tuned, hyper-targeted, advertising model. While the Privacy Act has been under review for years, momentum is lagging.
