For too long the world has blindly accepted that AI models are black boxes but recent advances in the science of AI interpretability have demonstrated that these systems have a profoundly rich internal structure. While larger and larger AI systems are actively being trained on vast amounts of data, reliability and safety remain huge challenges that are exacerbated by our collective lack of insight into what these models have actually learned. That's why my cofounders Tom McGrath, Eric Ho, and I decided to found Goodfire. At Goodfire we are building the foundational technology which will make interpretability the default. We envision a world where nobody deploys AI models that they don't themselves understand thereby making AI systems something we can truly design in the service of humanity. I think of a world with AI in the future that is more like Star Wars and less like Terminator. Everyone loves R2-D2 and C-3PEO and they brought incredible value. R2 had next level intelligence...most days I wonder why nobody has built an R2 droid like that to support me yet. I would buy it. The simple fact is that it is just easier to be afraid of the future. I don't care what it is - when people don't know enough about it large groups of people are just simply afraid of it. Yes, all of these new technologies we are building have the potential for evil - but that has been true of every technology ever invented. Yesterday I saw an AI for healthcare that could literally change the world of how we approach cancer, and I have thought of little else since. When you bring something into the world it has potential for good or evil - or both. We can choose our path for the future, and I believe in it.

We don't have to go far to find companies that are using artificial intelligence to push the boundaries of what we think is possible.
