Today is National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day. Today we honour those affected by domestic, family and sexual violence. We reflect on lives lost, support survivors, and reaffirm a commitment to ending violence in all its forms. This day serves as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to prevent domestic, family and sexual violence and support those impacted by it. Today we call on all those in attendance at the National Cabinet meeting to take immediate action for change. We all can agree these issues won’t disappear overnight, and require an ongoing, sustained response and much increased funding allocations to frontline services, however there are changes they can make right now which improve the safety of our community immediately! We can not afford to have even one person killed as a result of violence in Australia, let alone 36 women and 4 children in 2024 thus far. 🚨Actions not words! 🚨No more deaths! 🚨End the violence! 🚨Believe victims! 🚨Support victims! 🚨Hold perpetrators accountable! 🚨Stop victim-blaming! 🚨Fund frontline services! Save the date! 🕒 NNEDV's 19th Annual Domestic Violence Counts Survey Day is less than six weeks away. #DVCounts is a one-day, unduplicated count of adults and children seeking domestic violence services in the United States. This annual survey documents the number of people who sought services in a single 24-hour period, as well as the types of services requested, the number of service requests that went unmet due to a lack of resources, and the issues and barriers domestic violence programs face in providing services to victims. On September 4, nearly 2,000 local domestic violence programs help us gather instrumental data and raise awareness about their lifesaving work in order to guide funding and policy priorities. Today, we stand united in solemn remembrance of the countless lives lost to domestic and family violence. As we mark National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day with candlelight vigils across the nation, we reflect on the profound impact of this issue on individuals, families, and our communities. The recent tragic incident involving Molly Ticehurst reminds us of the urgency with which we need to address this pervasive issue. It's heart-wrenching to learn that in just last year, New South Wales alone recorded 36,072 incidents of domestic violence-related assault and 19 murders. These are not just numbers; they represent real people whose lives and families have been forever altered by violence. The fact that one in four Australian women has experienced violence by an intimate partner or family member since the age of 15 is a call to action for all of us. At Graceful Advisory, we dedicate our efforts not only to remembering the victims but also to advocating for preventative measures and supporting those affected by domestic and family violence. This is a concern residents have raised with me on several occasions, and it's a matter that demands our collective attention. It's time to break the silence surrounding this hidden crisis. We need to raise awareness, amplify the voices of those affected, and rebuild trust so victims feel safe reaching out for help. Remember, you are not alone. Help is available. 19th Annual Domestic Violence Counts- Save the Date for Survey Day! September 4 For the nineteenth consecutive year, on September 4, 2024, the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) will conduct our Domestic Violence Counts Survey: a one-day, unduplicated count of adults and children seeking domestic violence services in the United States. This annual survey documents the number of people who sought services in a single 24-hour period, as well as the types of services requested, the number of service requests that went unmet due to a lack of resources, and the issues and barriers domestic violence programs face in providing services to victims. Each year, our Domestic Violence Counts Report summarizes this data and is instrumental in raising awareness about domestic violence and the incredible work local domestic violence programs do every day, providing lifesaving services to survivors and their families. Year after year, state, territorial, and local advocates, national experts, journalists and reporters, and policymakers rely on the report to understand the realities faced by advocates and survivors.

Domestic violence affects so many individuals and families. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 72% of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner; 94% of the victims of these murder suicides are female. Also, 1 in 15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence. Bringing awareness can help us recognize it, report it, and prevent it. With the recent marches against gendered violence and statistics revealing that 3 in 10 assault hospitalisations are attributed to family and domestic violence (FDV), the urgency has never been clearer. It is essential for us to recognise the gravity of the situation and reaffirm our commitment to being part of the solution. Each of us has a role to play in preventing domestic and family violence, whether through raising awareness, advocating for policy reforms, supporting survivors, or fostering a culture of respect and equality. Every conversation is a step towards raising awareness and challenging harmful attitudes. 3. Support People in Crisis: Show compassion and empathy towards survivors of domestic and family violence. Offer a listening ear, validate their experiences, and connect them with appropriate support services. Your support can make a world of difference in someone's journey towards safety and healing. 4. Take Care of Yourself: Encourage the person to reach out for support so they don't go through it alone. Supporting others having a difficult time can also impact you.
