Why do I ardently advocate for "wellness retreats," "staycations," or "a quiet night out" for women? Delving into my cultural and social background, I've witnessed the frowning upon women taking a day off, not from the office, but from household chores (my mother reiterated this to me just four days ago 😁). This sentiment is prevalent, especially among Asian communities, where women are often expected to prioritise everyone else—kids, partners, in-laws, relatives, and sometimes even extended family!!!—before considering their own physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological, and financial wellbeing. The impact of neglecting self-care is either insufficiently acknowledged or dismissed as merely a phase – 'that time of the month,' 'women-drama,' or 'attention-seeking.' Women must reclaim agency over their wellbeing because, ultimately, if they don't, no one else will. Recognizing when you need a break becomes paramount. I acknowledge that participating in retreat programs may pose challenges, considering constraints such as time and financial commitments (In my case, who will take responsibility for my LO). However, it's worth contemplating small yet impactful steps to prioritise self-care, even if a luxurious retreat seems out of reach. Have you ever considered the simple pleasure of visiting a nearby cafe, dressing up, ordering your favourite dessert and beverage, and immersing yourself in a quiet moment devoid of social media? Picture the experience of just observing and absorbing your surroundings. Over time, gradually working towards fulfilling your wishes and wishlists can bring about a transformative shift. Imagine the feeling of refreshment, rejuvenation, and alignment with your true self. Taking these modest steps can pave the way for a more fulfilled and balanced life, offering a taste of self-care without the need for extensive time or financial investment. June 8 is Global Wellness Day. This year's theme is #MagentaNature, which calls on us to reconnect ourselves to the natural elements around us. The results can be “beyond brilliant,” as the BBC noted when reporting the results of a study of more than 18,500 people. Participants were asked to do something “wild” every day for a month—like smelling wildflowers, planting flowers for bees, feeding birds and walking in the forest. These people not only reaped significant increases in health, happiness and connection to nature but also acquired active nature behaviors (like heightened sensory awareness) that lasted long after the challenge ended. This year, I acknowledge Global Wellness Day not just as a celebration, but a call to action for me personally—to dedicate myself to the “practice” of wellness. Maybe this means interrupting my calls; stepping outside; breathing fresh air; walking in silence and finding some peace and balance in nature’s simplicity. This is the essence of self-care.
