Ohio is quickly becoming a world-class hub for life sciences. Columbus and Cincinnati ranked No. 1 and No. 2 among the top emerging hubs for researchers in CBRE’s latest U.S. Life Sciences Research Talent report. Of the nine clusters ranked, they were the only cities included from the same state. Both are home to research institutions that have received significant support through National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, with Columbus amassing over $306M in 2022 (including $252M by The Ohio State University). Cincinnati Children's, named the nation’s No.1 children’s hospital by U.S. News & World Report, receives the second-most research and fellowship awards nationally with over $169.6 million in NIH funding in 2022. CBRE published their highly anticipated 2024 U.S. Life Sciences Talent Trends, featuring the Gainesville region and North Central Florida as an emerging ecosystem demonstrating significant growth in the Industry! CBRE evaluates markets on the volume and density of talent along with ideal elements of an ecosystem that contribute to thriving life sciences clusters. It's no surprise to North Central Floridians that the Alachua/Gainesville region would make it on this list with the powerhouse research institute, The University of Florida, and thriving 800-acre life sciences cluster, Progress District right here in our backyard. Not only is UF ranked in the Top 25 for producing top-tier graduates in biological and biomedical sciences and 13th for biological and biological specialty degrees, but they have also received over $283M in NIH Funding and conducted a record $1.25B in research overall. The Progress District in Alachua, a short 15-minute drive from the UF main campus, is home to the award-winning UF Innovate Sid Martin Biotech Incubator and Fortune 500 life sciences companies. This thriving ecosystem includes a large portion of the biotech workforce and includes workforce development partners Biotility and the Santa Fe College Perry Center for Emerging Technologies. This is a really exciting list of innovations that are coming through... a few highlights for me are: 1. Speeding up the process of diagnosing Parkinson’s disease  2. Oral insulin that could change the lives for many diabetics 3. Effective recycling of lithium-ion batteries which are used in many electric vehicles (Ruth Ashton, is this one of yours?!) 4. Upcycling high-volume plastic waste into things such as high-density PE that can be used in manufacturing and waxes for the adhesives market Definitely worth a read
