Every six weeks, leaders from public and private sectors convene at the Mississippi Action Learning Network (MALN) to collaboratively enhance services for the people of Mississippi. This peer group, comprising 15 leaders from various agencies, is making waves in advancing family economic mobility and addressing critical issues affecting Mississippians. Facilitated by Alex Figueroa, Assistant Director of Learning and Development at the American Public Human Services Association (APHSA), MALN provides a crucial platform for leaders to unite, share ideas and comprehensively understand their impact on Mississippi. APHSA plays a pivotal bipartisan role, supporting leaders from human services agencies to uplift individuals, families and communities nationwide. At the core of MALN's mission is generative leadership, innovative programming, customer-centered experiences, and community-focused education. As a pioneering state in advancing family economic mobility, MALN is addressing workforce development, talent acquisition, equitable pay scale transition and more. Today, Governor Kay Ivey of Alabama enacted SB129. This legislation prohibits public schools from allocating funds to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives. In light of this development, several individuals have expressed their concerns to me, with some advising caution. I wish to clarify that my endeavors are not rooted in divisiveness but are firmly anchored in the principles of inclusion. This entails a collective effort to support the perspectives and beliefs of others, while acknowledging our inherent differences. It is not our place to alter the sentiments or convictions of another on contentious subjects. My role is to facilitate superior communication by fostering a culture of listening with the intent to understand, rather than merely to reply or take offense without fully grasping the underlying reasons. My faith empowers me to illuminate the path for others, cultivating an atmosphere where every individual feels listened to, appreciated, and cherished for their unique contributions. You are all beloved and significant, irrespective of your political, religious, or racial views, sexual orientation, gender, or disabilities. TRUSTEES FOR CIVIC INFRASTRUCTURE Our commitment to enhancing civic infrastructure by encouraging, educating, and inspiring individuals of all ages throughout the county would not be possible without the continued support of our trustees. LEADERship has a small group of Trustees for Civic Infrastructure who provide an annual investment critical to the ongoing success of our program. Each investment goes directly to participant programming and results in people taking on leadership roles in the community. LEADERship, in turn, banners the names of the Trustee organizations on LEADERship publications and materials. As is almost always the case with education, tuition for the class year does not cover the cost of the program. The support from the Trustees for Civic Infrastructure allows LEADERship to keep tuition at an affordable price to maintain the diversity we seek. That also allows us to maintain the growing network of leaders who are working individually and collectively to strengthen our communities.
