SDSU's Information and Technology division collaborated with Associated Students, San Diego State University to spearhead a groundbreaking initiative, orchestrating a triumph in the creation of a Generative AI student survey that shattered our ambitious target. We set our sights on 3,500 responses, but we defied expectations by an astounding 200%, recording an impressive 7,811 student voices. After the results were unveiled the highly innovative dynamic duo from IT, James Frazee and Jerry Sheehan extended an invitation for me to speak at their November 15th Information Exchange. I answered a crucial question central to Administration and Faculty's stance in the AI revolution: How do our students envision the university's dance with artificial intelligence? Answer: Harness it, integrate it, infuse AI with an abundance of SDSU's data, unleashing a tidal wave of innovation that generates SDSU’s rise in University rankings! We at King's College London had a cohort from a number of African countries work through the Generative AI in HE course together last week, coordinated by a Prof in South Africa. I really liked the way they met separately before, during and after and sustained conversations as they went, in the comments and discussion areas. This role is not just an honor but a profound responsibility, given our program's pioneering history in AI education since the 1990s—a time when AI was more a subject of science fiction than a scientific discipline. As we navigate the era of Foundation Models and Large Language Models, it is clear that AI is no longer just a tool for technologists. Its potential to revolutionize nearly every aspect of society is immense. I agree with Bryan Alexander's point in his Substack article (From 2023 to 2024 in AI, part 2: Notes on culture and higher education). He states that: "For an academic institution to take emerging AI seriously it might have to set up a new body. Present organizational nodes are not necessarily a good fit...Perhaps a committee or team is a better idea, with members drawn from a heterogeneous mix of the community." This is the same approach that Rutgers faculty used when creating the SOCRATES Project that I discussed in my post from yesterday. A very interesting development in the approach to AI use in education. It would seem that we may need to reduce essay / report summative assessment in favour of in-centre assessment that eliminates the possibility of students submitting AI produced assessments…
