"On June 19, our community will honor Juneteenth for a day of remembrance, a day of solace, and a day of victory. We remember and honor the community that survived and set a path for us, making us strong with conviction as we seek equity. Holidays and symbols are important, but we must remember the souls that brought us to have Juneteenth. We are witnesses to injustice and inequality everyday. 'We who believe in FREEDOM cannot rest until it comes' (from Sweet Honey in the Rock-Ella’s Song). This #Juneteenth, commit to action to keep this legacy we have inherited alive. Stay the path as we move forward together until everyone is equal and free." — Kathryn Blackmer Reyes, Librarian & Director of the Africana, Asian American, Chicano, and Native American Studies Center #sjsulibrary #sjsu
