This article tells the story of TogetherintheUK and of how we created an anthology of writings on migration. Its a story in part of how one seminar can change a life. The germ of the idea came to me when I attended a workshop in government on #behaviouralinsights. At least ten years later, we have a book. Now, you are never going to capture that on a feedback form but all trainers should take heart, you do not know what seeds you are planting. Many thanks to what we called at the time the CLP programme in government. #feedback #evaluation #training
“It is hardly possible to overrate the value . . . of placing human beings in contact with persons dissimilar to themselves, and with modes of thought and action unlike those with which they are familiar.”JS Mill In this article, you can find out how the 3 editors of Hear Our Stories, Consuelo Rivera-Fuentes, Sinéad Mangan-Mc Hale and Teresa Norman have worked together to bring Hear Our Stories, an anthology of writings on migration to life. You will find out just how much of a passion project it has been for all 3. You can also find out the story of TogetherintheUK. https://lnkd.in/e4uasJNw #migration #storiesthatmatter #anthology #TGIUK

The Dunki Safarnama While conducting research, it's so easy to get lost in the theory of the research, in the numbers of it, of the politics of it. Which is why it's so important to keep coming back to the "people side" of the research. To constantly remind ourselves that each individual has a unique set of desires and wants: a different reason to justify why they leave. Follow along as they tell their stories themselves. #dunki #safarnama #migration #europe #spain #illegalmigration #migration #displacement

Reconciliation is about restoring balance in the relationship between Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous Canadians. It involves a shift in power and knowledge, that is, who holds the knowledge and who decides what type of knowledge is recognized as valid…. Meaningful knowledge sharing and knowledge co-production results in better understanding and management of resource activities on the land. KEY TAKEAWAYS >> Complex problems require multiple ways of knowing. >> Recognize that sharing knowledge goes two ways. Actively show that you respect Indigenous Knowledge and the information needs of Indigenous communities. Make time and space to listen. >> A way of re-balancing and sharing power is through knowledge co-production. >> It means having an open mind to producing new ways of knowing and seeing different outcomes #science #Reconciliation #NaturalScience #research #dobetter #canada Website: https://lnkd.in/d67wfrW3

Globalisation is not a new phenomenon. Human immigration across continents was underway several thousands of years ago. And the living testimonial to that is the similarity in languages spoken in distant lands. 🇮🇳 🇱🇹 Sanskrit which is spoken in India has relations with Lithuanian which is spoken in Lithuania. It is believed that both Sanskrit and Lithuanian evolved from the same mother language and have been lucky to survive and retain the characteristics of the proto-indo european language. 🇮🇳 🇰🇷 The ancient Indian language of Tamil and Korean share lots of vocabulary, which many on both sides are unaware of. 🇮🇳 🇮🇷 Urdu which is spoken in India and Pakistan derives a lot from Persian, which is why I'm familiar with so many Persian words. 🇮🇳 🇸🇦 🇵🇰 🇹🇷 Again Urdu has derived a lot of vocabulary from Hindi, Arabic as well as Turkish. And because most of Bollywood uses Urdu instead of Hindi, most Indians unknowingly understand and speak it instead of Hindi, in the process learning a bit of Arabic and Turkish as well :) 🇮🇳 🇪🇸 🇳🇱 🇩🇪 There are several loan words in my mother tongue Malayalam which originate from Dutch and crept in via Afrikans. And now that I learn Spanish I also notice loan words from Spanish in my mother tongue. The reason being Kerala where Malayalam is spoken was the gateway to India for most western powers. German being part of the Indo-European languages also has similarities with Sanskrit, which is no surprise. ❓ What similarities of your language with foreign languages has fascinated you the most? https://lnkd.in/ermNQXq5

Singapore and Sri Lanka The Writing Genie and I, have seen a clip from Lee Kuan Yew saying at one point in time, that Sri Lanka was something that Singapore needs to aspire to. I have also seen many clips, from him, outlining where Sri Lanka went off the rails. Sri Lanka provided so much lessons for the wise gentleman to steer Singapore, which we ( the Writing Genie and I) cannot say we are proud of. Today, Tharman Shanmugaratnam has won the Presidential elections. His grandparents migrated to Singapore from Sri Lanka. ( Many folks from the Jaffna peninsular went to Singapore and Malaysia as administrators during the British times). One cannot but think, if Sri Lanka was a more cohesive democracy, folks would not have left in their droves. The fact that a Minority person has been elected with a landslide in Singapore, speaks for the strong nation thatSingapore is. A beacon for multiculturalism. Shows the progressiveness of this Island state. A far cry from Sri Lanka with all its troubles. Two Islands that travelled very different paths. One can only be amazed at the hand of Karma and the Universe, in their journey. We dare not take ownership for Mr Shanmugaratnam's background. He is a Singaporean. The Writing Genie and I, amused at an Indian News Paper claiming that he is of Indian origin. I presume all Sri Lankans are Indians too, if we go back in time. I wish Singapore all the very best. What do you think of Karma and the Hand of Universe behind each country? Thoughts?
