Last week, Lisbon was buzzing. 70,000 people from the tech world met at #WebSummit. Startups - including the founders of Apollo 14 residents Quantify Group and uGlobally -, policymakers, investors, specialists, CEOs, and journalists collectively searched for the answer to the question: where to next? The question that got stuck in our heads, is a different one though. 🤖 But first, a bit of context. ImpactCity is part of the RISE Fellowship program from the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt that unites 24 leaders from 12 European cities to develop ideas and solutions for their cities. As a part of the program, our #ImpactCity colleague Asceline Groot and WorldStartup representative Gerrit Jan van 't Veen were invited to talk about the opportunities and challenges of a public-private partnership at a WebSummit side event: Startup Guide Summit. Reflecting on both events, we realise that one thing stood out. The role of artificial intelligence came up in every, we repeat, EVERY single conversation. 🚀 Mastering Monday🌟 Today, I'm excited to delve into "The Triple Helix Model of Innovation. " 📚The TH, first proposed by Etzkowitz and Leydersdorff in 1995, highlights the symbiotic relationship between government, industry, and education in fostering economic development and societal advancement. This theory serves as the foundation of my research, offering a framework to understand how knowledge creation and sharing within this ecosystem drive economic growth. Here are the critical aspects of their research: 🔍 Main Independent Variables: Investigates the transformations in the roles played by these Triple Helix Agents within Silicon Valley's innovation ecosystem between 2008 and 2017. 🔬 Central Argument: Changes in one agent can trigger corresponding shifts in others, resulting in a dynamic environment. This evolution includes the rise of accelerator programs, early corporate engagement with startups, geographical expansion, increased university involvement in capital funds, and the emergence of micro-multinationals. 🧐 Hypotheses and Observations: The observable implications of the theory tested in the article include the effects of these changes in roles, the significance of accelerator programs, corporate engagement, geographical expansion, university involvement, and micro-multinationals on Silicon Valley's innovation landscape. 🌐 Generalizability: While their research is tailored to Silicon Valley, it raises intriguing questions about the model's applicability in diverse contexts like the Pacific. 🤔 My Hypothesis: If emerging entrepreneurial ecosystems like the Pacific exhibit similar patterns in the evolution of Triple Helix Agents' roles, this could validate the theory's generalizability and provide insights for policymakers and researchers worldwide. 🔗 Comparison: By comparing my hypothesis to the author's theory, I emphasize the need for empirical validation and the adaptability of theories when exploring innovation ecosystems in different settings. This journey has illuminated the intricate web of interactions among universities, industry, and government and their pivotal role in shaping the innovation landscape. It underscores the importance of adaptable theories and empirical validation as we seek to foster innovation in various regions and industries. I look forward to further discussions and collaborations in this exciting field of study. Kidults on Tech Spirit Barcelona 2023 by Tech Barcelona Three insights I got from Catalonia's tech scene. 1) In 2023, more investors pay attention to proof of the tech and proof of business model and less to the founder's ambitions. And it noticeably slows down innovation development. 2) Catalonian and Spanish startups think locally. They compete and focus on national or regional markets. Mentality influences even innovative ones. 3) Based on the Catalan Pitch Competition, the top industries for innovation here are medtech and greentech (and a bit of agrotech). All finalists are socially impactful green- or med-.  The winner is — Miinta (congrats, guys)

Exciting news, you're headed to Paris, France, for the "Deep Tech Days" organized by Hello Tomorrow on 21-22 March! 1️⃣ What happens at Deep Tech Days? Companies and investors focusing on deep tech showcase their innovations and invite attendees to engaging presentations! My colleague Iris Öhrn and I will discuss Gothenburg's efforts in the field and highlight key success factors. We hope our contribution on "The Gothenburg way" will provide valuable insights about the city to both investors and startups! 2️⃣ What are your expectations for the fair? I hope for inspiration and learning as deep tech is a broad subject and can therefore be perceived as complex. Gothenburg is already prominent, but there's always room for improvement! It will be interesting to hear others' perspectives on deep tech from an investor standpoint! 3️⃣ Tell us about "The Gothenburg Example"! We're hosting a side event on 21 March where several interesting speakers will shed light on various areas within deep tech where Gothenburg excels. The organizers are Chalmers Ventures and Business Region Göteborg, along with GU Ventures, Chalmers tekniska högskola, and MobilityXlab. 🔬Success story of the Estonian health tech accelerator!🧑🔬🔬    Our company completed the Health Technology Research Accelerator Program and is a 2nd Flight Alumni!    Silklytics is engaged in the development of innovative rapid test technology, which promises better quality results for on-site measurements.    According to Hanno Evard, CEO of Silklytics, the research accelerator was beneficial in several aspects. First, the accelerator had great seminars that provided a good overview of all the important topics for a deep tech startup. In addition, we received a lot of good advice from mentors who specifically dealt with issues important to our company. It was also important to be able to interact with other deep tech startups to share experiences in solving various everyday concerns.    According to the CEO, the research accelerator was an excellent platform that took the company's activities to the next level.
