Be a Journalist of your Brand and not an Ambassador When I took a journalism course in college, we were incentivized to interview students, staff members, community leaders and citizens. It was literally a ticket to walk up to strangers and talk about their lives. As a person who appears to be an extrovert, I am an intense hybrid of the two and can easily revert to being an introvert, which made certain moments in this class particularly challenging. Our teacher was quite adamant about us having credible primary sources and had us out doing interviews as the major part of the course. She instructed the writing was all up to us, but we had to follow certain guidelines of journalism. Other than covering “the six Ws”, we had to show both sides of a story if it had multiple perspectives. This was the major lesson I learned in college as a communication student. Not only to engage in internal dialogues but diagnosing problems and sparking conversations. Knowing that a story had multiple perspectives made me more empathetic towards others and very curious about humanity in general. The 6 Ws of Journalism has served me as a tool for writing, critical thinking, and storytelling. - Who - What - Where - When - Why - How? - the sixth w is actually - How? I don’t know 🤷♂️ (maybe as a memory hack🤔) The course also taught me that every one has a story to tell. Not only that, most people are willing to tell you anything if you’re willing to Listen 🙉 and gain their trust. Whether it’s in sales mode while tending to your customers or in leadership and management roles, knowing that you do have the control over any dialogue with the 6Ws along with your natural openness to different perspectives, can be a powerful tactic in business. — what systems do you have in place to keep the heuristics flowing into your channel for research and analysis? — how do you build new narratives around the main theme of your brand? From Journalism to Marketing🚀 From my days in journalism to my current role in marketing, I've learned that the right questions can reveal powerful insights. In journalism, I mastered the art of drawing out information, even from reluctant sources. My journey in journalism began on the metro desk at Guardian Newspaper, working under the guidance of Temitope Templer Olaiya . It was an interesting season of my career and a growth journey. I went to court to gather domestic stories, went to the streets, slums etc. His feedback—"I can't see the voice here"—pushed me to dig deeper while writing. I began picking up the phone, reaching out to police PROs, agency DGs, and other authority figures, honing my ability to gather and articulate insights. Now, in marketing, these skills are invaluable. They allow me to uncover hidden customer needs, craft compelling narratives, and create strategies that resonate. I found that people often enjoy talking about their passions, motivations and their story in general. In gathering insights, I position my questions from that angle. First I build rapport. This helps create a connection and shows genuine interest in their story. Here are some starter questions to help you depending on your audience type. 1. I've heard different perspectives on XYZ.
