You've been telling us that most SIEMs today are falling short. We wanted to know why. So we asked. And asked. And asked some more. Turns out, traditional SIEMS are: 🤑 Expensive ➕ Unwieldy 🤷♂️ Complicated In this highlight from the latest Product Lab, Huntress Co-founder Chris Bisnett digs into your feedback about the challenges with traditional SIEMs.

🤔 What’s the variability in starch properties of barley samples from all over the world? 📝 This is what we unravelled in our newly published paper “A global set of barley varieties shows a high diversity in starch structural properties and related gelatinisation characteristics” by Daan Gielens, Charlotte De Schepper, Niels Langenaeken, Ashley Galant, and Christophe Courtin 💡 In this work, the gelatinisation behaviour, amylose content and small to large granule proportions were assessed for 23 industrially relevant barley samples. Given the impact of high starch gelatinisation temperatures and granule proportions on the brewing process, it makes us wonder: Should starch gelatinisation temperatures and granule proportions become selection criteria for barley? 🤔 Want to know more? Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/egQ-atFx A special thanks to VLAIO - Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship for the financial support! #NewPaper #barleystarch #smallstarchgranules #starchgelatinisation #VLAIO #Selectioncriteria

Cannabis Science and Genetics 🧬 Co-Founder and CSO, S3 🧬 Gene Editing 🧬 BetterCannabisThroughScience Consulting 🧬 Molecular Biologist 🧬 Outdoors Enthusiast
One last request to those attending #mjbizcon (and to everyone really) - consider your carbon footprint. There will be all kinds of cool tech toys for sale. Do you really need them? Does the ROI justify the energy consumption? You're in Vegas and its dazzling - all those lights consume energy. You flew in - air travel emits the most carbon amongst transportation methods. Now you're looking to set up, expand, or modify your grow - indoor cannabis production is one of the most environmentally unfriendly agricultural methods in the world. Case-in-point: LEDs and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). You'll see some of the big LED players like Agnetix and FOHSE pitching high PPFD fixtures. But can cannabis even utilize over 2,000? For context in full sunlight at noon on a clear day, outdoor PPFD levels can range from around 1,000 to 2,000. The scientific answer is - we don't know yet, no one has run the studies (that I'm aware of). Fellow Canopy Plant Performance alumni, now at Aurora Cannabis Inc. - Victoria Rodriguez-Morrison showed from her Master's research at University of Guelph with Youbin Zheng in 2021 that PPFD utilization increased linearly to about 1800. Beyond that would it have plateaued? https://lnkd.in/gSeAUNtC I've attached the figure with high end 1600-2000 data points circled. Would a trendline through those be flat? If so, would that make high PPFD fixtures just bragging rights? Be the change in the industry you want to see. More is not always better. And to the plant touching side of the industry - let's build better genetics around sustainable grow styles, and not unsustainable grow styles around poor genetics. All that said, have fun if you're attending! Edited: changed 3000+ and 2000+ to "high PPFD" Edit: Changed linear through 1800, not 1600 #BetterCannabisThroughScience

Are you going to the International Conference on X-ray Microscopy (#XRM) in Lund next week? (https://www.xrm2024.com/) I'm not! Sorry everyone... But you might be interested in the following contributions. They are all posters, which means less public preening and plenty of time for chit-chat! 🐦 Tue 13th August, Poster Session B: - B06, Visualising Chemical Gradients in Aged Technical Honeycomb Catalysts for NH3-SCR with Operando Spectrotomography, presented by Shweta Sharma 🐝 - B49, XRD-CT study of molybdenum loss in iron molybdate catalyst (FeMo) pellets, presented by Kamila Iskhakova 🏗 Wed 14th August, Poster Session C: - C31, Ex-situ evaluation of degraded proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis cells by 2D X-ray fluorescence, presented by Leonardo Almeida de Campos ⚡ We are offering three diverse topics from operando spectrotomography, to XRD tomography, to XRF mapping, and three completely different fields of catalysis from bulk chemical synthesis, to pollution mitigation, to sustainable energy. Go forth and ask them lots of difficult questions! The XRM conference series is one of the best, despite I only made it to the one in Oxford in 2016. Really a diverse field from optics, to accelerator physics, to bio/chemical/materials applications. The interesting part is that the intersection of catalysis and X-ray imaging is basically non-existent outside of a few groups. For example there are only 2 (!) presentations which actively mention catalysis in the conference program, 1 of these being a keynote. Of course both are electrocatalysis... - Is it demotivating being one of the few groups operating in this space and having few peers to discuss with? Yes absolutely. 🤷♂️ - Is it going to stop us from working in this field, with so much undiscovered territory and potential breakthroughs? Absolutely not!* 🔍 💡 (*Until grant committees stop funding my projects of course...) Now I don't want to be the old man yelling at clouds, complaining about how the catalysis community is not interested or unaware about XRM methods. I'm going to continue muscling in and sending abstracts! After all, one of my favourite pastimes is sending: - catalysis abstracts to X-ray physics conferences, to confuse and bewilder the attendees 😲 ⚗ - X-ray physics abstracts to catalysis and chemical engineering conferences to befuddle and bamboozle the attendees 😕 ⚛ Maximum confusion for all! But amidst that fear of the unknown, pay attention, because you may learn something... #conference #research #networking
